Yesterday I took a trip down to Darglow engineering to have my MaxiProp serviced. The guys there were amazingly helpful.
They spent some time looking at the bearings and the overall condition and then said that it was fine and it did not need any work. The slack in the spacer piece in the centre was normal and the little bit of play in the blades (I had not checked that!!!) did not warrant any shimming. They then took some more time out to explain the settings and the best way to refit the prop.

A great help...

I then went trotting off to Raymarine Service centre. I wanted to check out the Linear Drive as it is oozing black goo!!! The young lady there again took some time out to explain how to strip the drive down and regrease the drive screw. Again I was expecting to pay out loads of cash on a service but I came away with immensly valuable information and an entact wallet.

Once again a great help... (I then spent yesterday evening rebuilding the drive... No problems /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif... )

In these days of gloom and doom it is great to have such helpful folk around.

cheers,

Just out of curiosity,
How much would you pay for each service and still feel you got your money back ?

The reason for the question is that every time I receive this type of treatment I walk away feeling I was robbed the very first time.

Did you go as far as "taking" all the ball bearings out of the arm?

When I was having problems with my Linear Drive, it was strongly recommended that I did nothing that allowed the balls to escape.

Hopefully I will never have to go there again, but you never know /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I did not take the ball bearings out of the arm. The young lady was adamant that this would give me a lot of grief and maybe mean an expensive repair by Raymarine. In fairness I think I could have taken them out and reassembled them but you need to work out the re-circulating route. It is a bit like an old fashioned steering gear from a sixties car (Sunbeam Alpine springs to mind).

I need to put in a steel roll pin as the one in there ahd shattered. I wonder why!!! The thrust bearings were OK and all in all I think this should now be fine.

It was interesting to see how the technology worked too... Very clever...

cheers,
