Cracking few days away with #2 son (Caley) staying in Calshot Thursday so we could head off for Newton Creek the following day for a swim and bob about in the dinghy.. ended up in East Cowes for Friday night cooking up a spag bol on board for us both.. yummy!!! motored over to Bucklers Hard on Saturday and explored the upper reaches of the river in the dinghy heading back to Calshot for a spot of fishing this afternoon before the wind got up...

Caley did brilliantly and put my worries about him being the only crew member to the back of my mind instantly, sorted the fenders, lines etc with ease and was a real help, looks like Deb's has competition for competent crew:D

Here's a video summarising some of the things we got up to.. that baloody outboard needs a good looking at as it conked out half way back from Beaulieu:( sounds very sick in the video

anyways, here it is.. should get across just a little of the fun we had over the few days.. dad n lad memories to be treasured

This is what i look forward to when my little boy grows up (4 at mo) good quality father/son time, he loves the boat but cant do anything other than sit and be watched by me like a hawk.

Great vid

Good story Gaz, you're clearly a very proud Dad!
It's amazing how useful the lads are when Mum isn't there to do things for them ;), sometimes quite an eye-opener for parents :)

It's also good for their own confidence around boats and being responsible for certain operations.

thanks everyone for the nice replies, can't stress how much I/we enjoyed it...

on the point about mum not being there, she'd have had kittens watching him in the dinghy on the river with the tide running...

Thought I give him chance to go for a trip without me at his side... he was well briefed on safety, had his life jacket on, kill cord attached, don't stand up, keep a lookout of other river users at all times... blah blah blah.... plus at one point he ended up right down by the BBQ area and had to row back as the current was too strong for an ailing engine... unknown to him, I followed down the track to keep an eye on him. watched him moor up against a pontoon, tie up, go for a walk, get back in starting the engine himself and set off back in the river to make his way back to our boat... all great learning experiences, especially the effects of tide crabbing back in to the pontoon area... I think he handled things rather well:cool:

Here's a video of the lad in action in the mioddle of the river as skipper of HIS boat:D

I think STEVEDUNSTABLE has a serious rival in the video diaries!

Top class. Very enjoyable. Great to see your boy get his own experience with his boat.

Thanks Gary. Looks like you had fun
Takes me back to my early days on the river when I was constantly in the dinghy, with the dog. Those were the days - not a care in the world :)
