We have an HX280E handheld vhf. Last weekend when we plugged the mains charger in there was a small flash and pop. The charger had died.

Following an e-mail to them, Yaesu ( Standard Horizon ) have now sent me a replacement foc.

Brilliant service. :)

No connection etc.

I had excellent service from them once too. Took my VHF to them because the RAM wasnt working - they changed a fuse buried in the mainset within 15minutes and didnt charge me a penny.

This has made me more inclined to buy another SH VHF, in addition to the quality of the product itself.

Poor Standard Horizon service!!!

Well to balance the good reports I was instead very disappointed by their poor service when they refused to program the UK marina channels on my VHF that came with my boat purchased in the Med!

They expected me to purchase a new set and I decided to do without M1 and M2 instead.

I had excellent service from Standard Horizon too! Had a CP180, which would occasionally lose position. This got worse and worse, when I phoned them somewhere along the coast of Spain, they arranged to send a software upgrade to me, to Moraira, further up the coast. I arrived 3 days later to find a package complete with instructions waiting for me! When I left to go across to Ibeza, I found that it still lost position! Phoned them again and they posted a complete new CP180 to RCN in Palma, which obviously did the trick!

On the basis that they did all the phoning around to confirm arrangements for posting and my collection of the packages, they give excellent service!

The sad thing is that these examples of "excellent" service are basically only what we might reasonably expect any decently-run company to do. It's the fact that so many don't that's the real problem.

I'd largely agree but my two experiences with Garmin -- 1 GPS aerial replaced, 1 GPS set replaced, both literally years out of warranty and total f.o.c. -- were excellent by any standards. In the former case I'd spoken with a technical bod who gave the impression of simply working in a culture of helpfulness. Or maybe he was just a good bloke. (Maybe higher up the Garmin ladder that might have been a culture of enlightened self-interest, but the effect's the same for we punters.) At the other end of the scale you have parsimonious, short-sighted bandits like Bosch (in my experience).

True, we should have good service from all companies, but this week Standard Horizon certainly did an excellent job for us. Our radio developed a fault this weekend. I took it to SH on Monday morning, unannounced, the radio was tested there and then and it was repaired and I collected it later the same day. Great service!

Poor experience with SH

I wish they provided the same service to me when I asked to program extra *authorized* channels on the VHF, they refused. I had to sell the SH VHF and buy a Raymarine which was programmed as required.
