I'm in the middle of buying a yacht and will be getting a berth in Brighton Marina. I Know that people say the cruising area is boring but I only live 10 minutes away and it would increase the opportunities for getting out for an hour or two, and I'd be more likely to pop down to do work on her. My question is- we will be given a choice of berths, apparently- are some berths better than others? better protected from prevailing winds? easier to get in/out of? etc etc . Thanks.

I don't know the answer to your question, but having just seen TV footage of todays sea breaking over the outer walls of the Marina, the further inside the better would seem like good advice.

If you live so close, why not pop down one weekend and talk to the berth holders.

Think proximity to bars where noisy customers might spill outside during summer months, this could be a positive or a negative depending on your inclination.

Also as it is a new boat you will probably have some projects so it would be useful to be located in a corner where other d.i.y.ers are at work.

Glad you've joined the fold, but then if you experienced 'Club class' how could you fail to.Sadly I've missed all of the club class parties, not living quite as close as you do (NE London) I don't get down quite as often as I would like. It'll be interesting trying to work out who you are the next time I do put in an appearance.Welcome to the club!

I berthed there during 2001 went down on my motorcycle during Nov 2000 to have a look, could'nt have picked a worse day, horizontal rain, sea coming over the wall.
Gave me a good idea of what it would be like. I think they gave me three to choose from on west Pontoon 16, I chose number 36 for reasons explained below.

Winds are prevailing SW so try to pick a berth on the western pontoon with the finger near to the main pontoon itself, my finger meant I could moor her with the finger on her port (I come in stern to) which seemd to make sense, cos prevailing winds blow her onto pontoon not pulling on warps.

Also Western pontoon nearer car park it is a hell of a trudge down to the east pontoon

We have been in Brighton Marina for well over 10 years, they are finally getting round to dredging and replacing the fingers. You would be surprised at what this has uncovered.

The boat next to ours was replacing his anodes twice a year. It turns out the original contractors dumped off cuts of steel wire near the main jetty.

Try to get on one of the new moorings. The West jetty is nearly finished and its nearer to the shops and pubs it also seems more friendly. If you are not happy they will always let you move.
