Am hoping my boat will be ready in a few weeks. At long last!! - so am beginning to arrange berthing down in Brighton Marina. Was asked the question do I have a preference as to where - East or West?

I know a few of the forum already have their boat in Brighton - she is only 20' - any suggestions / advice as to what to look for in a location, so am a little informed when I go down to meet them?

All thoughts appeciated.

I was on the West Pontoon in 2001 and it was more handy for the multistory car park we had to use at the time. However I believe they have a berth holders car park now up the east end and better ablution blocks? , as Pauline will confirm. East handier for the restaurants and taxis IMHO

The West is a lot quieter (apart from our pontoon that is!), because you're not close to the shops and tourists etc. Also the showers are great. They were finished last summer. The berth holders car park on the West jetty is closer to the pontoon than the mutli-storey on the East end. There is also a new launderette on the West jetty, but Mr B will be able to tell you more about that /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

East is more sheltered when the south west wind blows.

We had an 18 footer on the east side and in october 91 the wind coursed such a swell to come in through the entrance that the old girl sank!!!

East side used to have alot of fishing boats which do smell a bit but worse tend to head out at 5 or 6 am so tend to wake you when staying aboard.

Re: erm, I got confused

I met George Walker (Brent Walker) down there when my Company did the stone walls and coping and stuff for the Marina Walls. I went down with some samples, and was shown into a room where I was introduced to do a presentation which I had no idea I would be doing. It was about 1989/90 and I had a 911. Anyway the site agent said when he met me in the car park, we never buy anything from someone who drives a flash car.

How's the stone looking?

I personally prefer the east jetty. There are two car parks reserved for berth holders down the east end which I much prefer to the west end's public multi-storey car park, though they can get full up in the summer unless you are down early. I guess with a 20ft boat you will be mainly using it as a day boat, so the fact that the shops, pubs, restaurants, etc are up the west end will not matter to you (anyway the walk is pleasant enough), nor will the much improved toilet facilities. The west jetty toilets are due to be refurbished shortly. The boat yard and services, including a chandlery, are up at the east end, but I think the marina office is due to move down to the other end sometime this year.

You're not the only one- see Sun_coast.

I was once out in a small boat, pre-GPS when dead reckoning was the way to navigate; the visibility dropped and the skipper was happily steering south on the compass to get back to Brighton beach - it took a mutiny to gets us home safely!

Haven't had time to log on over the last couple of days, what has been going on?

East is where PualineB is moored - West is where we are moored. West is nearer the shops & pubs. East is nearer the petrol pontoon and boat yard.

As I've just finished my dayskipper course I think I am now well qualified in knowing my East from West and my port from starboard!

Thanks for all your help - you have really clarified the situation as were best to berth. East is East - West is West. No it's East is West and West is East!!

And here's me thinking of even wondering if any of you would be interested in showing me around the local spots along the coast when she is finally in the water - of course the beer will be plentiful and supplied by myself!! Not too sure now when we can't even decide on East is East or West is East.

Will let you know when I pop down in a few weeks to see them.
