I'm looking to replace my explodo-gas cooker with a spirit oven like the Origo 6000. Is there anyone in the Brighton area who already has one they could show me.
I've heard interesting rumours about the smell, but I might be able to put up with that for the piece of mind of not being blown to pieces.

Cheers,
Andy

We are not in the Brighton area, but we have and Origo 6000 and are very happy with it. We noticed the smell at first, but don't seem to notice it now. In France you can buy undyed meths called achol brule (not sure of the spelling) which does not have a smell. We like it because you do not have any problems with escaping gas exploding. We cook everything on it from boiled eggs to full roast dinners and would never go back to gas. We buy our meths online and in bulk (6 5L containers) which brings the price down considerably.

Where do you get your meths from?

I'm pretty sure I can get used to the smell too (the gas cooker smells as well), I'd just like to experience it for myself before laying out the cash :-)

Just sold my boat which had an Origo stove. I found the smell of meths while cooking to be off-putting. However, as ferroboat suggests you can pick-up Alcool a bruler in any supermarket in France for very little € and it's odour free. So if you fancy the occasional trip to Fecamp / Dieppe it could be a good solution for you.

I don't have an oven but do have an Origo two ring cooker. I'm very happy with it and have tried both meths & froggy alcohol a brûlée. They both smell a bit but I got used to it. If you can get a 5l of the froggy stuff, it's far cheaper.

The main plus IMO is that it's completely self contained. The gas installation was dodgy to say the least when I bought the boat. So the simplest fix was the Origo.

Fitting was very simple & it's easy to remove for the winter. maintenance consists of a good clean every autumn.

Simples.
