Hi all,

Has anyone got any advice regarding cruising around Brighton? I have a relative who insists that there is much the charts and cruising guides won't tell me. I'm half expecting the Kraken to show up and eat us all as standard!

Thanks

Hmm, there is the nightlife and attractions of Brighton itself, but one of the major problems with cruising around Brighton is that there is nowhere much to go. To the east there is Sovereign Harbour at Eastbourne, then Rye further on, both nice, to the west Shoreham and Littlehampton, neither of which really have much to offer. On the water, you can make a trip is the Royal Sovereign lighthouse, and Fecamp, which is 60nm due south. Cruising under the cliffs east to Beachy Head en route to Eastbourne is quite a nice trip. That though is about it.... and is why I'm based in Gosport despite living 10 miles from Brighton. As to the Kraken - well that would liven things up a bit.

Edit - I forgot about Newhaven to the east too, but then.....

I think your relative might be using the local definition of 'cruising', which doesn't involve boats at all (although in fairness, you do see a lot of it quite close to the marina)...

Brighton was a recent visiting hole for us, had a lovely time, (lanes, cycling and shopping), so not a bad spot for that kind of thing. Careful coming out of the marina in anything coming from South or East, it's can be very sporty!

Don't agree with the coment about Littlehampton, it's a great little marina, your v39 will fit perfectly, Emma and the guys there will really look after you. From there you can take the tender up the river to Arundle and have a lovely outing....well worth a visit.
And of course if you get the right weather it's rather nice sitting off the beach on the hook watching them, watching you :)

Hmm, yes, on reflection I was being a bit unfair about Littlehampton. It certainly is very nice up river from there, and Arundel is lovely. Watch the tide though, the Arun runs fast and hard, esp on the ebb, and there's a shallow bar at the entrance.

We keep our boat at Brighton and have done so for the past 18 months. Last summer in fair weather we were able to cruise along past the pier and drop anchor in a few feet of water in front of the Grand Hotel. That made for a lovely lunch and when you actually get out it is great but it seems a rare occurrence to be able to do that! Once you are out you really can't go that far and I agree with AdeOlly in that the main frustration with Brighton is the lack of anywhere to go for a day/overnight trip. We used to keep the boat at Chichester and were out all the time. Here in Brighton there is almost limitless 'life' on land in the city which is great because the marina itself is a bit shabby in places and not the most pleasant place to spend a long time. Bear in mind also the fact that it is no longer a '24-hour' access marina due to silting during the 2013 hurricane and a lack of money put into proper dredging.

Blimey - just seen this as well. We did see the CGI on the marketing suite/shed in the marina but thought it was a mistake....

Why would the marina operator allow that? (assuming they has any influence).

The whole redevelopment of the marina seems to be ill conceived, of very poor quality and entirely out of place. Obviously redevelopment was required, but why so high!!??

Just spotted the replies on here. How on earth is a lifting bridge going to work then? Theres' enough problems for yachts coming into Brighton marina on a calm day on a falling tide or just after low water if there's quite a few heading in at the same time. With southerlies forecast and being the only safe haven for a good few miles around is it really going to work if boats have to hover about waiting for the bridge to be lifted?
