Hello all,

Having introduced the wife to sailing over the last couple of seasons from an expensive pontoon berth at SYH,she feels upto moving to the halfway stage towards a swinging mooring. She was also impressed with Brighlingsea, so I thought I'd start looking to see if we could make a move. If anyone has any info on who to talk to, how long the waiting list might be, cost etc, etc Id much appreciate it.

Thanks

Ian

Attagirl. Thats the kind of SWMBO you need.

Brightlingsea very nice.
Along comes Flipper and others to tell all shortly.

Brightlingsea good place to keep a boat, harbour master and assistants very helpful and always keep a watchful eye on the boats. There's also a good friendly atmosphere on the pontoons between fellow sailors and the towns got a couple of chandlers and engineers if you need em.

Kept my boat there for five years till I moved away last year and now on a swinging mooring in the Blackwater don't regret moving but would reccomend anyone to try Brightlingsea.

I had to wait two years before allocated a berth think it might be longer now, cost for a 26' foot boat in 2006 was (I think) about £560 for the summer April to end October, likely to be more more now plus harbour due's and you get charged for the overall length the boat takes up on the pontoon - so my 26' became 28'.

Nice friendly place.

Ooop's forgot to say - apply to the harbour commissioners they ask for a small deposit to put you on the waiting list refundable against your first seasons berth costs.

Pricing at Brightlingsea varies quite a lot depending on where on the pontoons you are - some areas bottom out at low tide. Waiting lists vary as well. If you want to keep a dinghy there you will have to join the yacht club at about £ 160 per year (unless someone knows an alternative). There is a water taxi during the summer months, and the harbour master will give lifts during the winter if not busy. The only thing that put me off Brightlingsea is that car parking appears to only be on the streets, unless you want to pay for the car park. There are few restrictions and plenty of space, but I don't like leaving my car on the road.

If any of this is inaccurate, I apologise, and await enlightenment.

As you have suggested give the HM a call - Bernie Hetherington - 01206 302200.

Very helpful staff, keep and eye on boat when you are not there. Not sure of waiting lists etc. My boat costs about £600 for April to Oct on north side of south cindry pontoon where if I am not afloat the boat settles into the mud upright on only the lowest tides with 4' 6" fin keel.

Jon on the Watertaxi is brilliant (VHF #37) - every Friday evening and weekend, then during the school summer hols he is there 7 days a week. If you need anything done on boat he will know who to talk to.

I always think it is a shame I keep the boat at B'sea as it is the sort of place I would like to visit!
