Last time they helped me my wife said, "I think maybe they expected a tip."

They are helpful, and I wouldn't grudge them a modest tip, though I do always find the tipping process embarrassing and confusing. However, it actually never occurred to me to tip them. I thought they were simply doing their job. I am always profuse in my thanks.

Am I the odd man out and earmarked as a miserable git? Do skippers generally tip them?

I have made them tea before.

I understand that as Christmas approaches the Harbour office is awash with Christmas Bottles that get split up between the staff.

Quite right too, it's the least that we can do to show our appreciation. They are a great crowd, always helpful and friendly.

I've never really understood the etiquette of tipping.
I do sometimes "give a drink" to someone who I think has gone out of their way to be especially helpful, but why am I expected to give 10 or 20% extra to a waiter who has just done a not very difficult job?
Would it be OK to tip a policeman if he was to help me in a difficult situation? Probably not, but I'm expected to bung a barber even if he has done a **** job.
Just sour grapes really, nobody tips a quantity surveyor.
