Sad to report that Brian Webb the former popular and public spirited Lock Keeper of Hurley has lost his battle against Cancer.
His funeral is at at Reading Crematorium @ 09:15 hrs on Friday 25 October.

The funeral details have changed...

Now confirmed as 10:00hrs, THURSDAY 24th October at Reading Crematorium

It was actually a severe heart attack that took Brian away from us...

Sorry Folks! I seem to have got everything wrong, my only excuse is I was passing on the information I received in an E Mail.
My abject apologies to anyone offended. Brian was one of humanities beacons and knowing him was a privilege for me.

Brian was one of the best, really good at his job, very friendly to boaters & (I hope I've got this right) was awarded a honour (MBE/OBE ?) for the enormous number of children he fostered. I'm a building inspector & he never let it drop when my son got his head stuck in the bannisters & was photographed in the Henley Standard - still telling everyone in the lock ten years after. What always amazed us was his ability to ensure there were no lock queues, he had the same assistant for many years and used to shove them in and out v quickly, not try and cram the lock, also remember his charity openings of the lock late at night regatta Saturday etc. Unfortunately I missed him at Peter Freebody's funeral, and with Trevor Green's passing a few weeks ago, yet another Hurley river person so sadly gone.

Byron,
Please do not feel that you were wrong... All of us act on the information received...
When I first heard, the information was based on cancer and also had the original funeral details.
I, like you, was busy passing on the information to those that I felt would be interested (not an easy task, but like you, I just got on with it)
I then received more accurate information, which included the altered funeral details, I then had to send out the revised info...
It was a severe heart attack, but they also discovered that his liver was badly affected by cancer...
