I need some Brazilian Mahogany to match existing varnished joinery [inside] but the price is now very high. Timber merchant has suggested Utile as a cheaper alternative.

Q. Will it look much different when varnished? Anyone know of a site showing photos of the two types so I can compare them?

Hi.
I am in South East London/ Kent and have lots of Brazilian Mahogany. I'm not a company but bought a lot to convert my trawler.
I can supply any size, even up to the two hold beams i've just replaced (12foot x 8" x 3").
I've used it for rib extensions, cleat spacers etc.
I can send pictures of the type of finish in Epoxy or uncoated.

Spend the extra on Brazilian mahogany if you can afford it. Utile and sapele are rubbish in comparison - coarser grain, much more difficult to plane and look cheap and nasty. If it's on show, it will annoy you every time you look at it.

Will it look different..... very much so...totally different colour, the variants are much more yellowy?! than Braz. Mahog., if you are trying to match something, its almost impossible (Been there & got the T.shirt) hth
