I realise there are many posts around the general topic of cutless bearing replacement- however I would like to ask if anyone knows if the traditional all-rubber form of bearing (as used by some French manufacturers for example) is now considered inferior to one with a shell made of grp, phenolic resin or brass ?

I've read a comment on one post that stated 'no one really uses rubber cutless bearings anymore' - which was stated without any further explanation.

I'm about to replace the original all-rubber bearing on my Jeanneau so would be interested to hear opinions on this.

TIA.

When I built my current boat, I used Visconte bushed for the cutlass bearings and for the rudder bearings as it does not expand and is OK water lubricated

Not my experience on boats down here in Portugal. Rubber still being used on the Ben Jens etc. One advantage is that they do come out more easily when changing the bearing than some of the other types. Most people want like for like replacements generally.

Suspect the comment about not using rubber bearings any more is in relation to the old Stuart Turner rubber bearings which are no longer readily available and most housings have now been converted to use brass shell cutlass. Rubber bearings are widely used by Beneteau and Jeanneau and no reason not to replace like with like.
