Brass lamps

For all you cruisers in continental Europe; you can get a similar lamp from Toplicht in Hamburg who specializes in these sort of things. It is their part number: 4049-020. You can order on their webpage:

I may have asked for the wrong thing here?
I have seen one on a boat recently and it was over the saloon table and it clipped up to the deck beams on a small chain and there is a small chain on the bottom of it to clip it to the table.
So it cant get flung about at sea.
Is that these?

If not where could i get one like that?
They are quite a big thing and i was told they are about £300?

Yes, the one from Toplicht hangs from a deck beam on a chain. You should not attach the lower part with a chain, it would be too rigid. Instead use a flexible bungy cord that has some give.

This lamp is rather large, larger than the one from Classic Marine. I have one myself. I doubt that you can find any larger, at least not one that would be practical on a boat. The price is about 160 euros, or about 110 pounds. Good value. It works better as a central heating system than my Eberspacher.

The small chain at the bottom gives the game away.
If it has, and I asume it has a hanging point at the top as well as a 'hanging point at the bottom', then it is an anchor light. 'All round white light, hung from where it can best be seen'.
It would be hoisted from a flag halyard or suchlike fixed top and bottom to stop it swinging around.

You should be able to get one of these from a good chandlery, try a proper ships chandlers not a 'yottie swindlery'. I'd try somewhere like Cosalts, GealForce (they stock a lock of comercial stuff) or ask at a shipping agents where to look, most big ships have to (well used to have to) carry a set of oil lamps (and oil) in case of generator/engine failure and such like.

All the best

I beg to disagree. I think the name "Trawler Lamp" really gives it away. It is not an anchor light. It is designed to give maximum reflected heat, as opposed to maximum light in an anchor light. This design was the standard oil lamp that has kept the cabins in our European fishing fleets warm for more than a hundred years.

I can personally attest that the heating properties are excellent, and as a nice extra benefit; the light is also good enough to provide a good reading light. It is an extraordinary good design.

BTW, the cord attachment at the bottom has always been there to avoid too violent swings in seaway. Nothing to do with anchoring, IMHO.

Look at West Marine.
We ordered a second Trawler lamp + replacement burner for our original lamp + extra glass funnel. Cost + delivery & duty was less than for EU (originates in Holland) prices.

Regarding West Marine; yes I agree they are often cheaper. But not always, this is one of those cases. The very lamp is presently on 'sale' at West Marine, check here:

But my math of this price $230 plus shipping $35 plus VAT $46 is $312, which is about 207 Euros. It sells for 160 euros from toplicht. It pays to shop around!
