Just wondered if anyone knows what is happening with Bradwell power station. All the scaffolding is down and the two buildings have been clad in some very nice (presumably) metal cladding. Less of an eyesore, I think, but is it being mothballed or what?

Can't do the technicalities but all the nucleur powerful stuff (rods?) has gone and finished and as much dismantled as possible and has to be left alone for years and years because the site remains contaminated. But more recently they were washing out FED into the Blackwater which is something nuclear allegedly very weak. And they created a store of FED or something but unfortunately - oops accidentally built a store too large so to make it cost effective they have to store this waste from other sites but then they had promised never to bring in waste from anyone else but that promise couldn't be kept or the waste store would have not been cost effectively used. Something like that. Someone will be able to help with the accuracy. Oh and then the Chinese are building a new nuclear power station next door but are they now Theresa is postponing Hinckley. Anyway it look prettier now it is dead than it was alive.

I worked on Berkeley which was the first commercial power station and immediately preceded Bradwell. These two were built by different consortia but were basically the same technology.
I'm not an expert on decommissioning but imagine that the prime consideration is to get the fuel elements out and into a more controlled environment. Left in the reactor their tendency to split would discharge the contents to collect below the reactor with a risk of criticality. Also the uranium oxide fuel reacts with the graphite moderator.
