As some may have read we've just bought a new Humber 38 and are keeping it in Brighton. Like everyone else I was excitied about taking it out and all that. Dad has had over 2 months to play and still I can't touch. With our old boat he was prepared to let me go on holiday with my mates up the Thames and I frequently took it out on my own. A few months later and I'm not even allowed to sit at the helm. Please help, when will Dad overcome his protective "This is MY new toy" phase?

Suzanne, "Pop" here.

You can have a go any Time. Reasons for your dissapointment. Prefer to stay at home to watch cricket or football (I must have a word with your mother as there is no way a chld of mine could watch football). Too busy thrashing around in the channel with Pauline ment you missed the delivery trip. You must remember that when you get a new toy you have to start learning all over again. You've got to learn how to polish again and learn the route around the fore deck so that you can react instantly to my incomprehensible babblings.

The thought of travelling to Scotland every Monday has, I admit, caused muscular spasms resulting in an inability to release the grip on the steering wheel during my free time in the civilised world.

New toys need carefull running in. All the quirks and drink stands must be found and checked for correct working order. The helm position has been found to be completely acceptable. All instrument are easily readable and the G&T falls neatly to hand at all times.

Time to try out the saloon to see if I'm able to manage the cocktail bar and the ice maker, or will this be a duty your mother will retain.

Good news for you is the auto pilot is a bit temperamental so you may need to steer a bit while I'm testing. So don't give up hope yet.

Tell him you need to do a report on the boat for one of the motor boat magazines and they don't want any pictures of old fogys on board. This then enables you to take along as many fit french men wearing the appropriate attire as you want (but don't tell your dad!!).

The other alternative is to use my sons gambit and just tell him you're going to use it and off you go.

Cheers Byron, have you read the above message? Seems "pop" may be getting a bit sentimental in his old age! Maybe a trip for me and the girls to the med isn't as far away as I thought!
