Just scanned the on-line papers this morning, partly to see if all had Ellen as the top-story, and as expected and deserved, all carry euphoric banner stories on her success...

..except for The Guardian, whose completely mis-judged article has a go at her 'pointless and self-serving exercise'.

What a bunch of w*nkers.

"What a bunch of w*nkers." Sums up the guardian pretty well on this topic at least.

Followed to its conclusion I guess in the Guardians eyes all our national heroes only did it for the publicity?

Whilst I disagree with the Gruniad sentiments, I actually deplore the current climate of intolerance towards expressing a contrary viewpoint.. rather than just a vitriolic slagging off, why do'nt you come up with a well reasoned witty response as to why they are misguided? Long may the press be free to express non-populist viewpoints. Otherwise we're further down the path to a fascist state.

Whilst I totally agree with your sentiments, I completely deplore the expression of sensible arguments on this bulletin board. Otherwise we go down the route of grey logical conformity.

I really must object to the reasonable tone of your otherwise illogical refutation. If this carries on I won't know what I'm supposed to agree with anymore.:)

"partly to see if all had Ellen as the top-story,"

I haven't seen this mornings Guardian yet, as I leave home before our paper lad arrives, so I can't comment on the priorities given to various stories. However, Ellen's achievement, wonderful as it is, is not of comparable importance to the middle east issues etc.

There are those who will feel that it has been a "pointless and self serving exercise". That it is self serving is beyond doubt, Ellen will, deservedly, gain from the whole thing, it has been a professional venture after all. As for pointless?

Is it not the duty of the newspapers, that we read, to question our perceptions and values? And maybe, just occasionally, help us to put thing in to perspective.

I personally feel that it has been a far from pointless exercise. However, a great deal of the "point" of the venture is the stretching of engineering expertise and human ability, and, as such, the record needs to be broken again quickly.

So, well done Ellen and good luck for the attempt to extend/regain the record.

what do you expect. I remarked last night as I was watching Ellen on TV, that some labour party tosser was bound to say it was all pointless and a waste of money. If the Gruniard and their like had their way we would all live in basic utilitarian buildings, all sport and enjoyment would be banned (except the pet labour party pursuits of 24 hour drinking and mega casinos of course) and every spare penny would be spent on some equally pointless public sector white elephant (like the NHS or education system). The guardian of all people should realise than when Tony wins the next election and prompltly hands the tiller to gordon, we are all going to need a nice event to look back on to give us a warm glow, coz there sure as sh*t isn't going to be anything to look forward to.

I'm not sure I agree with you - yes the middle east etc are all important - but we are sinking into a world where it is becoming very unfashionable to be a pioneer, to do something great, just for the hell of it. Personally I think Ellen is the top story, we've all seen moronic politicians posturing about supposedly mega world issues before, and if thats not the very definintion of self serving then I don't know what is.
I for one am glad to see Ellen and others from her dying breed. Just for one day why not forget all the bullsh*t in the news - its all going to still be there tomorrow anyway.

That's your viewpoint, mine and probably all of the posters here .. but do you really wish to suppress contrary views? I'm sure that there are many other people whose perceptions as a result of their personal circumstances may be slightly different?

Guardian disaster

You have to appreciate their utter dismay : - thousands of people have recently been able to read the repetitive droning dull prose of a northern slightly dykey middle-class whingey woman on a daily basis - *WITHOUT* having to buy the Guardian :)

Mmmmmm?

Interesting article. I dont see it is making judgement on her or her achievements at all. Your quote about "a pointless, self-serving exercise" is a quote about opinions expressed by others elsewhere. I have seen similar comments in this board in recent weeks so they are not that far wrong.

Lets see how people's feelings towards change now she is home and the record is hers.

Fair enough Jimi, but if you'd read the article you'd see what I mean, it's not exactly well-reasoned or witty itself. It was also 8am in the morning. Humour doesn't kick in for me until mid-day at the earliest (nor for you, judging by your response, which hardly leads by example). Anyway I'd like to see the hack who coughed this one out write Moby Dick after running over a whale which was one of his more minor criticisms. 'Pointless and self-serving' indeed - but that's the Guardian columnist, not Ellen.

And Steve, if reporting on the conduct of an illegal war, bringing in incarceration without trial, banning minority sports/hobbies, massive public spending increases without corresponding improvements in public services, etc are still not going to get the current lot booted out in a few months, I don't see what harm one day of feel-good-to-be-British news does us all?

Much better that people express an honest view than simply conform thereby joining the ranks of the 'two faced'.

Well done Ellen, you are a breath of fresh air in this otherwise benighted world. Just don't let the self-serving leeches that will be gathering around your achievement take advantage of you.

extremist lunacy

Oh dear there you go again. You really haven't clue have you, hm? Yet, again you have completely misjudged the entire situation, and failed to grasp the importance in this modern and dynamic global economy of combing your hair nicely, furrowing your eyebrows when dead people are involved, and letting out a smal laugh when there's a difficult question and saying "oh for goodness sake, pulease".

I'm not trying to suppress a contrary view point, merely expressing my own view point to the contrary of the contrary viewpoint aformentioned. Which of course the person in question had every right to express in this land of freedom. However, as I said, I agree that people can express contrary views, but in this case my view is with the mainstream, and as such is contrary to the contrary view ... er are we going around in circles here?
