I have a QL bow thruster which is acting up a little bit. Say for instance I go to starboard the motor clicks a bit then kicks in and out for a few secs but then works fine. If I go to stbd again there is no clicking or intermittence it just works. If however I want to go port the clicking comes back. it does not seem to like changes of direction.

I had thought it was a loose or bad connection but I have been all over the cables and they are ok. I am now thinking its something to do with the motor, any ideas anybody?

I would imagine there is a relay somewhere in your control which is playing up?

At a guess I'd have thought it fairly easy to swap the connector underneath the control to see if the fault moves or stays on the starboard side, obviously the control will work back to front. If the fault moves to the port side then it's not the motor but probably the control.

Agree with Kevin - Sounds like the relay.

I think you'll find the relay is attached to the thruster motor. The contacts can be cleaned with an emery board. If it still plays up (which mine did) the relay may need to be replaced and they're not cheap. Think I paid £160 odd for mine a few years back through Keypart in Watford.

On the T34 it is a pig to get at, especially the wiring.

Fortunately for me at the time, Peters had one in their reception and allowed me to copy the wiring on to my own diagram, which made removal & refitting much easier, but still took best part of half a day. On yours, access may be better.

I had this and replaced the relay, just the same after, replaced the battery and it was fixed so if you can, try a different battery first just in case, mine was over 4 years old.

Mike was yours a QL bowthruster?

Mine likewise - A QL600

If it plays up while the engines are running, I'd assume enough power would be supplied, regardless of battery state??? But may well be wrong - re Mike's post.

The "click" you hear is the contacts on the relay opening & closing. The contacts themselves are quite large, and become quite pitted. The spark they create is worrying!! Also the "click" is a hundred times louder when you're right beside the relay, so be prepared for it!

Since you hear the "click", try cleaning the contacts and see if that cures the problem, although maybe only temporarily.
