Ahoy fellow sailors I just bought a new to me Moody 41 I found this polished stainless tube that seems a bowsprit for a geneacker. Does anybody saw something like this? Advices how to fix it to the bow and how to rigg it is really appreciated. ThanksIMG_0040.jpeg

Odd to have a bend like that in a bow sprit. Can we have a pic of stemhead fitting? - might help puzzle this out.

The removable pin certainly looks like it mates with the bow roller . Perhaps bent for the light wind sails to clear/not snag something.

I have seen several tubular stainless DIY bowsprits tried, over the years, and most of them bent in service under the loads.

Below is a 'clip' from Selden's Yacht Mast manual showing their recommendations for DBS vs USL, for different RM and Displacements.
Note this is for T6062 alloy/tube diameters made by Selden. Tubes are available in same alloy, but different diameters and wall thickness.
They also make carbon bowsprits.

Is the bendiness perhaps associated with a lack of bobstay?

Hi Carlos.
It is very well made and the bend is part of the original construction. No wrinkles!
It looks like it fits to a bow roller . It would be pretty easy to find out.
Have you tried to fit it?

I made a bow sprit from a piece of sched 40 stainless steel tube and fixed it to the center plate of my twin roller stem fitting

I would like to see the thickness of the tube as if it's a thin wall tube I an not surprised the tube is bent

I'm thinking a question put to the well-named 'Moody Owners Association' might provoke an answer.... perhaps along the lines of 'We've all got one of those. If you find out what they're for, do tell us!'

My guess is that the bend serves to make the outboard part of the prodder more horizontal, given that the bow roller will be higher than the deck. Given how short the inboard portion is considerable care should be given to where the inboard end bears down on the deck.

Of course we could all be wrong and it is actually part of a davit or an outboard crane designed to go on the pushpit!

I suspect that the bolt on your version bolts through the spare anchor roller crossways to hold the bowsprit in place . Ours has a through bolt as well downwards. If you look on web for details of another Moody 41 Dragonfly for sale you will see pictures more like the tubular version you have .

Thanks Ashtead,
It definitely helps, really apreciate your help. It seems my stainless tube might work in the same manner as your square one. I just did'nt found yet any attachment to the rear part of it. As far as I can figure it ou it seems the pin is the correct dimensions to fit it to the spare bowroller, i just did not found yet any rack in the boat to secure it in the back. But this boat its relativety new to me so I'm still in the process of lerning her lines. It's good to know you also have a 41AC. Unfortunatly the previous owner of mine was not able to pass me his knowledge about her so I will probably message you with questions and doughts about her systems.
