I have long time considered a sprit on my 25ft'r .... like Macwesters - she carries weather helm and moving the genny fwd would go a long way to assist in a cure.

The design I came up with was basically either a wood post or alloy pole .... set at slight angle on foredeck to clear stem anchor fitting - but stay attachment at end on centreline.
The sprit would have a stay under down to the bow just above waterline to counter the upward forces from sail. Side stays would provide lateral assistance ...

Size of sprit ? That I never got to - but ideas were - excuse the simple example - along lines similar to fence posts !!

That one I made for a Macwester 26. She was called SeaKelb then but new owner saw no reaon to change bowsprit. Between 90cm and 1m from the old deck fitting, I cant really remember, and solid admiralty 2 inch steel pre-drilled by steel supplier so no need for side stays/whisker stays.

I did it for just the reason you mention. Previous owner had moved rudder and made much larger but that merely increased helm workload in strong winds.

We used 50mm box section for more recent work on different boat, but added side stays. I wish we had had the money on the Mac to replace genoa with one with longer foot, which we did on the LM
