Bowline knot

Re: Bowline knot - for \'old fools\'

The bowline is a fantastic knot if you take the right precautions. In 3 strand twist the strands open and tuck the end under one, otherwise use a half hitch with the end. Make sure it is pulled tight and you won't have any problems.

The other great thing about them is no matter how tight they are pulled you can always undo them.

I have had people banging on about the lack of mountains
in Norfolk!! Therefore i spect they think because of lack
of Mountains, we don't have any mountaineering experience
hence our inability to tie knots.
I did once consider taking my Ranger up Snowdon, to set
an Welsh record for the altitude record for a Mobo i Wales,
but the Welsh Nationalist Party banned it cos the boat was
English.
A running Bowline by the way can also take the place of a
Hangmans noose by the way, must be a good knot, they
don't want the norty criminals slipping off the rope do they

Asd I've just added to Poter's thread, leaving the tail long deals with the vibration problem completely.

Re: Bowline knot - for \'old fools\'

Look at how climbers are recommended to do a bowline by the British Mountaineering Council - the tail is given another turn and rethreaded. This does several things - the knot can't work loose; it adds to the amount of rope in the knot so reducing curvature and adding to its strength; it is easier to undo after loading.

All bowlines on my boat are tied this way, as are my mooring lines, which are given a round turn on the cleat to reduce chafe.

Regarding shackles on pontoon cleats - the marina doesn't like it for a couple of reasons - the boat is harder to move in an emergency, and the thimble damages the cleat. The next user won't thank you for creating sharp edges.
