I don't use it, but it's always a good trick when people get talking about knots.

TI'm used to putting the load at the top of the loop.

So how does that work when the "load" is the boat you're sitting in and can't really be placed opposite you?

In such circumstances I generally use the "capsize an overhand knot" technique.

this might not be a true bowline but it looks like the ones I make
and does not look much like the sliding bowline

The one I remember is as your Video. It was about 50 years ago when I learnt it so I may have got the name wrong!

After years of sailing and making bowlines the "traditional" way, i got taught this method in urban SAR course as a quick way to make a snug bowline around your own waist.
Useful in some cases but sometimes i find it is difficult to invert the knot on heavier stiffer lines.

Tie a bowline and capsize it by pulling the loose end out straight, that will show you

I've been "learning" the bowline - I can cope with this method much better than the hole, the tree and the rabbit that jumps into the pool! But have I learnt a true bowline?
