Can anyone recommend someone to install a bow thruster in the Ipswich area? I can do the electrics but I need someone reliable to install the tunnel and fit the thruster.

My boat, a Bavaria 40 Ocean, is still in the water at Ipswich Haven and I'm planning to lift out there but would consider lifting out at another yard if that was the best place to get the job done.

Any suggestions appreciated.
Steve.

Harbour Marine Services at Southwold, one of their staff posts here as "Javelin". You can search the PBO for some of his posts that show him fitting thrusters, top job.

Fox's did ours - not the cheapest but hey - who you gonna ask to cut a plate-sized hole through the hull of your boat...?

I'll declare an interest before I start, as a shareholder and director of Suffolk Yacht Harbour Ltd.

Last year the team at SYH installed a bow thruster for us on Wild Thyme, tunnel done by the SYH yard, electrics by the late great John Gill (sadly his funeral later today) but henceforth by Ollie of Se[apower Marine electronics and natty stainless work by Mr Stainless, all coordinated by Yard Manager Josh Major. We're certainly happy with the result, which looks like it was part of the boat's design. We went for eyebrows to fair in the tunnel, rather than the more expensive faired recess option, but have not seen a measurable fall off in sailing speed, but we don't race nowadays.
If you want a price for the job, get in touch with Josh Major at SYH, specifying which thruster you want and being clear about which jobs you want to do yourself.

I don't think John's passing has been mentioned on these pages. Not unexpected since his diagnosis around 12 months ago but, nonetheless a great loss, not only to the profession of marine electricians but as one of the great characters of our East Coast - he will be sorely missed by many.

We had our thruster supplied and fitted in a bew tunnel by Foxs and they did a great job. We did the rest of the fit as we opted for a hydraulic one (having the option of a power take off from the gearbox) with a bit of help from Pirtek. It goes wothoput saying but make sure the people you choose know exactly what they are doing - resealing, creating proper 'eyebrows' to remove drag, commissioning everything and have loads of experience. Foxs also have decent lift hoists and all the other trades and supplies on site should you need them during the installation.

Hi I am based in Ipwitch on the haven side there are a few people in the yard that can do this work for you ask around if you would like I am on our boat most weekends we are near the fairline sheds Princess 330 pop round and I can give you anew names for you to discuss this work with

I'm also in Ipswich Haven. We used to have a DuFour 455, the first Mariadz, and Steve Pike at Watercraft UK fitted this for us and we were very pleased with it. We have also had work done by Terry Clarke who is excellent. Both of them are adjacent to the fairline sheds.

I'm sorry to hear that. I didn't know him particularly well but he did some electrical work on a replacement, quite complex fuse panel for me - as you say, his was excellent work.
. . .

Fox's did mine last year, a first class job. They did all the work, bowthruster, electrics, new battery, changed windlass cabling so it ran from same battery. You are welcome to inspect if our availability coincided, boat is in Fox's.

The attendance at John Gill's funeral at Seven Hills crematorium this afternoon was evidence of his great popularity, standing room only for the hundreds from all walks of life who wanted to celebrate his life. It was an honour and a privilege to be there.

Peter.

Apologies for the Thread Drift.
