This isn't going to be of any use answering the question, but there's a book by Geoffrey Jenkins titled "A grue of ice" in which Bouvet plays a prominent part. A work of fiction, but a cracking read, as are many of his other books. :encouragement:

i have read a book by one of the "finders" will try to remember/dig it out, worth a read

bit haunting wondering what heppend to the occupants? (did they find some clothes nearby?) the guy who wrote about it in the book was only ashore for a short while (40mins?) really need to dredge my bookshelf/memory

Suspect the Russion visit is the most likely one - and the occupants went back to the mother ship via another boat or helicopter

probably :-)

the book was crawford's about tristan de cunha. there's not a lot more detail in the book than available on that interesting mikedashistory website linked to above

yes of course i would like to sail there. landing may be another issue...

Why not? With waves the size they get down there week after week?

The waves would have to keep it continually suspended in the top 20 feet or so of the water column because as soon as it got below that then it would sink to the bottom. No chance at all of that happening.

FWLIW my take on it (all based on the info in the website posted in the OP) is as follows :

  1. Russian survey ship arrives.
  2. Conditions far from ideal but they try anyway and put men ashore in a boat which is not the whaler discovered later but a different one.
  3. Boat is damaged getting ashore.
  4. Crew stranded and attempt repair using copper tank
  5. Captain of survey ship spots what they are up to and sends men in whaler to assist carrying equipment and materials to effect repair.
  6. Men have adventure getting ashore in open whaler.
  7. All men leave in repaired boat and abandon whaler as being an unnecessary risk.
  8. The End

Just a guess but everything on the list is supported by evidence on the linked website.
