Given the sea was a bit rough for the family, we left the boat in Poole and stayed for a night in the Marriot on the cliff that overlooks Bournemouth pier and the bay where the event took place.
The fireworks was OK, nothing spectacular. It ended with the barge catching fire and we assumed the rest (including the "record attempt") was cancelled... I was lucky to capture the final flash on camera, though
We watched the air shows on Thursday and Friday. Loved the red arrows who, as usual, were absolutely brilliant! Also, the Vulcan and Eurofighter. Pity the camera battery run out before the latter arrived so ended up using the mobile's camera instead.
There were more boats on Friday and they definately seemed closer to the action, possibly beneath some of it. I would recommend going by boat if the sea is nice.
During Thursday's show, we watched the coastguard assisting a +/- 40ft cruiser that seemed to have lost power and was getting close to the beach. This happened on the wrong side of the pier so I assume it was not part of the show. I didn't have my VHF to hand - any idea what happened?
except when your boat is broken for the second year running and stuck on its mooring due to a lack of drive!! spent this afternoon on the cliffs watching the airshow and looking (rather jealously) at all the boats at anchor, next year i WILL be joining you on the water
