Ahoy there, I am considering changing my boat. I currently have a Karnic 2050 which I love but as we never use the cabin I am thinking of changing to something with more useable deck space.
I have been tempted by the unsinkable legend of a Boston Whaler. Maybe it’s just the BW marketing but the thought of the kids and an unsinkable boat is very appealing.
The Dauntless 230 looks an idea family boat. With a couple of sun loungers with folding backrest at the bow for the women to relax back on. Whilst the men & kids fish or wakeboard from the stern. The stern seat with folding backrest and reversible pilot seat with locking backrest looks absolutely ideal for socialising at the stern. The optional activity tower looks great for keeping the boards out of the way when not in use.
My only reservation is that the Dauntless only has a 16 degree deadrise at the transom.
My current Karnic has a 18 degrees deadrise at the transom which I don’t think is enough for when the weather turns a little choppy. The formidable Solent chop can get a little tasty so it would be nice to have a hull that can cope.
The Outrage has a 21 degree deadrise and so would probably be a lot better with a soother and dryer ride.
The downside to the Outrage is that it is set up more towards fishing rather that the whole family. The fold-out stern seat with backrest bolster is nowhere near as comfortable as the Dauntless’s folding backrest. The Outrage does not have the comfortable bow forward port and starboard seats with folding backrests.
Ideally I want the deck layout of the Dauntless but with the deep v hull of the Outrage.
Does anyone own or has previously owned a Dauntless? What is the ride like? Could she handle the rough stuff?
Or am I being over paranoid about deadrise angles?
Your comments and suggestions would be most useful.
Many thanks Matt
