Can someone explain to me how to affix the wire loop on my new bosco boat hook....

Ok. I had the wire loop made up as it was a lot cheaper....

From the bosco leaflet I can see to shackle the smaller loop to the hole where the hook pivots... but the big loop just appears to be pushed on to the hook.... my trials like this end up with it slipping off before I have pulled back and sprung the spring....

You're doing it the right way. On the Bosco wire loop the two loops are the same size. The trick is to hold the hook with the open jaw upmost so that the loop doesn't slip off, then it works.

Easy. The best way is to allow the spring to close the mouth of the hook rather than have it locked into the clip on the boat hook. To do this you may need to squeeze the two retaining tangs a little tighter to hold the bosco hook into the clip. I made my own sling and made one end smaller (for the shackle) and the other slightly larger for the hook itself.

Even easier.

If you dont want to be able to use the slipping bit (and I dont normally when coming alongside), put both ends of the wire loop into the shackle.

If you do want to be able to slip (i.e. if the helm makes a dogs dinner of the manoeuvre) place one end over the jaw and use a small bit of insulating tape or duct tape to hold in place.

A word of warning about the bosco - make sure you oil the small spring that keeps the latching mechanism shut until pulled by the inner rope. Mine rusted out so suspect its not stainless!
