A friend of mine has offered to lend me his boat, but being a suspicious character, I'm wondering about his motives. Does he really want the insurance money I ask myself or is it a genuine offer? If the former I should sink it, if the latter care for it tenderly ... I really want to help. What shoud I do to find out his real intent?

Not wishing to simplify things too much, but why don't you.......................Ask him?

Well i can't surely .. if he says "Sink it", surely that invalidates the insurance claim?

As long as you don't tell! It wont matter to the insurance. But you would tell, wouldn't you, being such an honest chap, you'd drop him right in it! But he could drop some subtle hints, like "don't bother bringing it back" or "leave the gas on unlit with a candle on the table" or something similar, that'd be OK.

That\'s easy

It's free. You're a Scot. (smile).

If he says his mother in law is going along for the trip, then you will know the terrible truth.

If he's a whisky-drinking man, check if he has a bottle on board.
If yes, bring the boat back.
If not:
a) he's a tight git and doesn't want you drinking his whisky;
b) he's a tight git and sees no reason to lose a dram along with his boat;
c) doesn't want any potential aggro from the insurer about having lent his pride and joy to an alcohol-crazed Scotsman;
d) he's already drunk it.

I think it's probably wise to borrrow it, ask no questions at all, and sink it. I failed to do this a while back, and the owner is now none too pleased at all the maintenence jobs are still waiting there for his attention. I should have been able to guess what was required by the miserly amount of kit on board (he'd even nicked the autopilot!) and the total lack of information about the boat EXCEPT for the location of the seacocks. Hopefully, you won't make the same mistake.
