I am stuck in La Palma Canaries and cant find a mechanic that speaks any english. My gearbox output shaft seal started leaking unknown to me and the gearbox must of overheated. When I put some more oil in it turned milky so the oil cooler has probably sprung a leak! I can hopefully fix that ok but re the oil seal any chance of replacing it with the box in place and just disconect the coupling. I would have 2/3 inches of room to work. Or if the box has to come out do I disconect it from the reduction box or does the complete unit have to come off being dissconected at the engine?
It is loosing about a litre every three hours. Is this a fairly standard seal?

Needs to be removed

Your gearbox needs to be removed and serviced contact lancing marine in the UK very helpful guy. The back part needs to be seperated after the oil is removed the seal is straight forward to replace kits can be bought from the UK. You would be better off buying the manual at the same time. There was a guy from sheppards in Gibralter that could take these gearboxes to pieces blindfolded but can not remember his name.

I let some Spanish engineering firm loose on my gearbox and ended up having to buy a new earbox at 2000 sterling they are not cheap. they are also incredibly heavy about 180 kilos and if it wasnt it certainly felt like it.

Hi Bluefinch,
The manual can be found here:

Good luck with the repairs. After sorting the gearbox cooler leaking problem, you may wish to consider removing the gearbox output coupling, replacing the seal, refitting the gearbox output coupling and then just flushing the gearbox with new gearbox oil a couple of times until the oil comes out approximately the same colour as it went in. As I said, you may wish to consider that as an option.

Paul

if the box has had water in it the friction plates get damaged, as they are made of paper, as per auto transmissions. later ones were bronze.

so it will probably need a strip down
