Just been perusing and book about the early Thames with lots and lots of pictures.
Photographs all from a collection started by photogapher Francis Frith. Earned his fortune as grocer then sold up and devoted his life to recording history with a camera at the turn of the last century.
www.francisfrith.co.uk.
There were 11 tons of glass plates in his library when he died.
Worth a look.
In the text it mentions that there was "a certain amount of tension between the skiffs and sculls on the river and the commercial trip boats" . Who would have thought it. ?

For Medway folks
The Kent Museum Achive has lots of pix .
The old lock at Maidstone. Location now known as Lockmeadow. You can with care still see remains of old lock chamber. The river was once tidal up to this point.
