When I started sailing I hated all the terms that more experienced sailors used. I soon realised that it helped if everyone used the same/correct terms. One thing I don't know the correct name for on my boat is the thingy that I connect to the back of my boom when not sailing, it goes to the backstay, has a snapshackle on the boom end and is made of the same wire as the rigging.

sounds like a topping lift, but that normally goes from the end of the boom to the top of the mast, but as a strop going to the backstay does the same job, then give it the same name.

I have a topping lift which supports the boom this just stops the boom from moving from side to side too much when not sailing.

I know what you mean, I was going to say Westerlies have them but you know that!

Never needed a name for it. Boom support thingy ?

I had one of those thingies a strop from backstay to boom. Never worked out what it was for although it was suggested it was to stop boom thrashing around when on mooring. Clearly it was a charlie romeo alpha papa solution so if you find a better use you get the pint
