I am here from the dark side to ask for help for my son who needs some aluminium repairs done on the boom of his Everitt 29.

The gooseneck has worked loose and the rivets securing it have worn oval the rivet holes in the boom.

At the moment the boat is in Dover and so any advice in the Dover, Kent area or anywhere in the county really.

If all else fails he will have to take it to his normal berth in Chichester Marina next month so any information regarding "ali-fettlers" there would help also.

Thanks

Tom

Your choices will be a larger hole and rivet, drill and helicoil and use screws or shorten the boom slightly and drill new holes. Other possibility would be a fresh set of holes displaced from the current set.

If you don't wish to do it yourelf I can tell you that I had my mast repaired by a firm in Chichester Marina. Can't remember the name but it is next door to Holman Rigging . They did an excellent job.

My boom split at the end rivetted onto the gooseneck. I removed about 1" and re-rivetted it to the fitting. You could do the same to get rid of your oval holes. All you need to be careful of is check if there is sufficient outhaul remaining with the shortened boom.
You will find that the boom is easily cut using a sharp hacksaw. Make sure that it is dead square. Measuring for the new rivet holes needs alot of care if you want a snug fit for the joint between the boom and gooseneck. Use Monel rivets of suitable size, anti - corrosion paste is recommended but I didn't bother.
Cheers,
GM
