Body parts warning by police after Southsea beach torso find

I think they found an arm today. Not wishing to make light of a tragedy but 'trying to establish a cause of death'? I would have thought missing his head, both arms and both legs would be a good start!

... the same thought went through my mind too!

An article about this appeared in today's Metro - London freebie paper - showing police divers searching a pond. The text actually said that the torso was found in the pond, near Southsea beach, rather than on the beach itself.

UPDATE, one arrested:

A man has been arrested in connection with the discovery of a torso on a Portsmouth beach.

The body, without head, arms and legs, was found by a group of foreign students at Southsea shortly before 17:30 BST on Tuesday.

Police said the body had now been identified and officers were informing next of kin.

A 46-year-old from the Portsmouth area was arrested on Thursday night and remains in police custody.

Detective Chief Inspector Dick Pearson said: "At this stage only a torso has been discovered.

"Other body parts or items linked to the murder may have been discarded in the area."

Anyone who notices suspicious packages, possibly wrapped in black bin liners, in the area has been urged to contact police immediately.

A post-mortem examination carried out on Wednesday was unable to determine an exact cause of death, but a police spokeswoman said the victim had been "subjected to a sustained and violent assault".

Richmond Road in Southsea remains sealed off and a cordon is likely to remain in place for some time, police said.

Ah the London comic - Just think how much better off mankind would be if something useful was handed out free to a million people every day. Instructions for running a bank for instance...:D

I understand that there is more than one body - three in fact - and the police are confident that once they have collected all the feet they will be able to fathom it out

As a keen watcher of crime TV I know that people are rarely killed by being subdivided like that, even by decapitation. Whole bodies are such awkward things to dispose of without attracting attention, and can assist the police with their enquiries...

Well that's not quite right, putting aside the loss of the arms and legs, many have witnessed yachtsmen losing their heads over trivial matters, yet have successfully sailed on for years!

Well at least they've worked out that the poor chap was "subjected to a prolonged and violent assault."

Good work Miss Marples.

Not quite sure why you are being sarcastic.

He could quite easily have been poisoned, drowned or suffocated before being dismembered once dead. It is very unusual to dismember live people - it tends to be noisy & messy. But once dead it's just a matter of simple butchery with far less & more manageable blood flow.

Not that dismemberment of dead bodies is all that popular a pastime either.
