I have acquired a decrepit 9 foot sailing dinghy which I am rebuilding for my grandchildren. The dinghy is a "Bobbin" of which I understand over 1200 were made by Pearson Brothers (now out of busines) at Arundel on the south coast of England. I am trying to find the dimensions and shape and style of the rudder and dagger board in order to make them since both are missing. Can anyone help please?

I've got the rudder and dagger board but I'm unlikely to get down to the boat for a couple of weeks. I'll try to remember to get photos and dimensions next time I'm down. Drop me a PM with your email address.
Very capable little dinghies by the way.

Great, no hurry and will be delighted to get information . My E Mail address is derekwilks21@btinternet.com
Also liked the pictures, by any chance do you know of a sailmaker who will be aware of sail dimensions. Finally there is no inbuilt bouyancy on the Bobbin - bags used?

Hi Derek
The Bobbin seems to have gone through a few design changes. The earlier version just had three thwarts with flotation only built in at the bow. A later version had a complete internal moulding with big chunks of closed cell foam under all the thwarts and side seats, that's the version we've got.
Early version on the left, later version on right...

Not sure about the sail dimensions, there were a lot of these built so there's a good chance a sailmaker will have the dimensions in his database. I'll see if I can get the dimensions from our rig.

Cheers

PS I've got a note of the email address so if I were you I'd delete it from the post above, save getting tons of spam.

Thanks again. Have asked for a quote from Arun Sails. Have access to closed cell foam used for our Club (Lewes Rowing Club - Sail and Power) pontoon flotation

Hello again Derek - for anyone else a similar design (same mold?) to a Sailaway dinghy. My Sailaway dinghy sold on last year had closed cell foam under seats (not thwarts) for boyancy. Was ideal.

Wow, I think I have one of these! I have had it for perhaps 13 years, and always assumed it was made by Pearson Yachts in Rhode Island, U.S., since I am in Massachusetts and purchased it from a man in Worcester, MA. He gave me several masts and booms, dagger boards, rudders, and sails, but I have no idea which go with this boat. Mine has a mahogany transom, though I'm not sure it's original. I'll try to check the nameplate tonight. Very exciting!

Whoops, sorry for the distraction; just looked at mine and yes, it's a Pearson made in Bristol, Rhode Island, U.S.A. What I have learned so far is that Pearson made a dinghy as their first product, starting in 1958, named Plebe. Mine is serial 108, so probably pretty early. Here's a pic, for what it's worth:

I realise I am resurrecting a very old thread but hey ho. Anyway, I am in the market for a Bobbin Dinghy but haven't found any for sale. Does anyone out there have a Bobbin dinghy they would be prepared to part with?
Waiting with bated breath,
Steve

You're still welcome to my spare! Might be worth trying Shiply for a transport quote - if someone has a van going past SW Scotland to the Solent it might not be too painful.

Thank you for finding a "Bobbin" for sale on ebay. Unfortunately the mast, sails, rudder and dagger board for this Bobbin were stolen last year so it's only suitable for rowing and outboard. I want one I can sail so will have to continue looking.
My good Bobbin came without sailing rig, so I am going to have to make one. I have a spare rudder and the daggerboard is easy. I'm planning to use a Topper 4.2 square metre training sail on an adapted aluminium mast from a gunter-rigged Mirror, which leaves just the boom to worry about.

Wow, I am good! Now I want someone to find me a Fleetwind dinghy to bring back to life!
Wow, my father designed the Fleetwind and we had No 1 up untill the 70s, when he gave it someone to compete in the nationals.
Many happy days learning my limits (and beyond..) as I was allowed out solo from age 6.
Got an old newsletter of you want a copy.

Friend just renovated a Heron. Another forumite gave us the tube size for the ally mast off a Mirror, 2", as it has a very similar rig. In the end we built a doug fir mast and spars, as we have a good local supplier and said friend enjoys the wood process. Scored a secent set of Mirror sails of the 'bay'.
