Had a conversation with a forum members earlier this week that got me going again,/forums/images/icons/smile.gif [ thanks BarryH]/forums/images/icons/cool.gif
Where do all the nautical terms originate from, there is a lot of information passed down from generation to generationm about this.
I know where the word
Knots originated and thanks to the kind gentleman I was speaking to I now know where Port and Starboard come from to.
But what about the rest

I know one from my sea cadet days in the dark ages.
We were taught that "mayday" (the call sign for help) is an english interpretation of the french term "m'aidez" (to help).

Cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey.....
Not enough room to swing a cat......
To the bitter end....
Three square meals a day.....
All come from nautical terms.

Sounds like a winter trip out on my boat :)

Re: i\'d rather be with jim

F%$£& me the F$%£*ng F*&^%ers F&*^ked
comes from the man who bought the first volvo engine

between the devil and the deep blue sea
the devil is either the longest plank or the longest rubbing strake (depending on who you believe)
so if you fell overboard at some point you were twixt the two or if it was the plank you slept on the outside bunk at the waterline you had the devil and the deep blue sea outside you and you did not want to be between them

I'll scratch your back your back if you scratch mine
referred to floggings in the fleet whereby if one man recieved orders to flog another he would go easy on his mate and only scratch him on the basis that at some point the favour would be repaid when he got to be flogged himself

i'd rather be with jimi
refers to getting trapped at the bar by the local know it all who will bore you senseless to such an extent that you would rather be on one of jimi's channel crossings risking extreme sailing and pot noodles

Kissing the Gunner's Daughter

Bent (usually a midshipman) over a cannon for a caning.

No cannons on our boat but I find that the upturned dinghy is a satisfactory alternative!

Let the cat out of the bag..........cat o`nine tails, was kept in a canvas bag, to let it out meant somebody was to get a flogging.........meaning now...... slightly different.

....Son of a gun........the offspring off a bit of nookie, in the only semi private place aboard, between the guns on the gundeck!...honest!
.....show a leg.....said by the bosun, when women were allowed onboard, so the girls would stick a leg out of the hammock, so the bosun wouldn`t beat them out of their hammocks with his "starter" (a knotted piece of rope, used to "start" the unwilling or slow crew) for their watch.
I know a bunch more......

Re: i\'d rather be with jim

.. and from the same area ..'the devil to pay' In full was 'no hot tar and the devil to pay'. In other words no tar left to 'pay' or fill the 'devil' with. I was always brought up to understand that the devil was the seam between the outermost deck plank and the covering board. The reason that it was called the devil was that it was just that - very difficult as the covering board would have been punctuated by the timbers emerging through it to support the bulwarks, and so it was difficult to keep the tar container at a steady angle. My old man was both a square rig sailor and a shipwright so I believed him.
