That phrase always puzzled me, until I saw this little corker:

What other ones do the forum consider to be ugly ducklings?

When I were a lad, we called them.... Plimsolls

and all the kids under the age of 12, always wore short trousers. even in winter..
we got chapped legs...

My.... how things have changed.... sorry I digress

The Buckler ketch looks like the shoe from the There was an Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe nursery rhyme.

I passed one of them.

He left the anchorage at day break. We left after a late lunch and passed him a couple of hours later. He was bravely beating to windward in a F5 making not much more than 0 knots VMG.

He seemed to be enjoying it - even if he was not really getting anywhere.

Twister Ken,

I and a chum always fancied buying a Buckler and making a TV series about pirates, "Swash-Buckler !"

Then again I'd better not mention his suggestion for a GK29 name, first word 'Ginger'...

Buckler

I seriously considered buying one

that back cabin looks huge - room to put the dinghy on the stern deck - lots of small sails

well sheltered cockpit

separate heads

diesel inboard

can accommodate friends in the front cabin where you can't hear them snore

triple keel

all the rigging would get in the way of the filming a bit

I must really be losing it

so here is a film of a nice boat
