Hi all,
Can anyone tell me what the rules are for having the boat's name on there somewhere, is it a requirement that it be at the stern, regulation size letters/font, etc. Any recommendations where I can get the letters made up cheaply please...
Many thanks,
David.

No rules on the size of boat names or position but the SSR number does need to be a minimum size and spacing etc.
And yes i can do them for you if reqd.

Does Part 1 Port of Registry need displayed, or is it optional?
For pat 1 registry the port must be displayed, for part 3 the SSR number. There is a required size and font for the SSR number.

You may be able to avoid having the name at all but customs launches take an interest in boats with no name.

Yes it needs to be displayed. You can get details of the suggested style from the Registrar. Basically a plain font, cant remember if it stated a size / ratio but I don't think it did.

I used a slight fancy font, because I don't like Helvetica but its still plain enough to read.

Ta. I've just rung them and was informed, rather grumpily, that I would be getting full details in the carving and marking instructions, due to come when they've processed change of port. i shall wait, agog.

Will you do mine as well?????????

Part 1 requires the letters to be 75mm high or more, but that's liklely what you'd be doing anyway. Coding requires the name also to be on the bows, not just the transom, above a certain LOA threshold (15m I think) but few surveyors enforce that particular rule. If visiting other countries (France comes to mind) make sure you have a name also on the tender, and "t/t" before it, otherwsie if you are unlucky enough to meet a jobsworth official he will tell you it is an indepenedent boat then you're in trouble for not having registered it (I know I know, barmy, but don't shoot the messenger)

May not apply to you but here in Portugal the name must be on the transom as well as bow.

Friends here were fined by the Maritime Police just a few weeks ago.

Does it definately havre to be on the bow? I'm thinking of putting mine on the aft quarters and transom?

I apologise for the delay. I have been away.

I have checked with the people who were fined. The rules here quoted by the Policia Maritimo are name on the transom and on both sides 'on the first third' of the boat from the bow.

Silly, isn't it.

The rules are indeed on the back of the carving and marking form which you have to sign and send back. Probably why no-one can remember what they are once they've done their own boat.

For most people not using raised/engraved lettering I believe they boil down to name and port of registry conspicuously on the stern in letters no less than 5cm high and of proportional breadth, and black (if on a white background) or white or yellow (on a dark background)

I have seen plenty of boats with ports of registry marked which don't conform to the colour rules. This doesn't necessarily mean they're Part 1 registered of course. Does anyone know of anyone whose markings have been checked?
