Boatless of Scotland

Well she's gone. I put Amoureuse up for sale at a fair, if highish price and some b**ger's only gone and bought her for very close to what I asked. Incidentally, she fetched circa 10% more than I paid for her in 1991. I have had her for ten years and got very attached. The head says you've done the right thing Nick, but the heart is broken.

Regulars will know she's a Birchwood TS33 with all the extras - Genny, Radar and a little thing on the dash to tell you the outside temperature. She even has her own ironing board which fits the saloon table socket. Engines are basically the same as Haydn's except mine are (sorry were) more original than his. They still push her to 26knts and don't leak much oil for TAMD41a's.

I don't know what I'll do now. The head says wait for a bit and let some of the policies mature and the current economic circumstances (recession?) pass by but the heart says how can you do without a boat? On the other hand, there will never be another boat like Amoureuse..............!!!! What was that man thinking of paying that sort of money?

Why did you sell her, and what do you think you will replace her with? Also did you go through a broker (if so which one provided the best service/results) or was it a private sale.
I'm sure the cheque will help you overcome your grief - there should be some good deals around before too long. Well done!

I sold because

a) I have a business reason
b) Although everything works, she is basically 13 years old and I began to worry about something major going like an engine, etc. Whilst not a catastrophe, I did not want to have to spend that sort of money on a boat I was contemplating selling. On the other hand I have no reason to think that properly looked after she won't go on for another ten years.

I placed her with Kip Marina and I have to say they were OK but perhaps not as sharp as they could have been - their software did not work so they could not get her on their website and I notice that she ain't in their spread in the mags this month. On the other hand the salesman did me proud once he got people onto the boat. Incidentally, I was told to get lost on the sales trip as "I would only get in the way" My house overlooks the river so I had to watch them going up and down in my pride and joy.

I am not sure what to replace her with. I am older now and the need for speed has waned but I would still like something capable of at least say a 15knt cruise so that rules out Dutch Steel Boats. On the other hand, if I did go slower I might entertain a motor sailer. A single engine would be OK provided there is some kind of emergency auxiliary. Really comfort and sea keeping ability is what I want.

Nick.
I accidentley went through the same thing, and funnily enough
in Troon. I sold my 33 in about three weeks. I just kept taking things off the inventery. The bugger bought it anyway and I went through a berievment for about two years. Then a mate of mine died unexpectedly so I went out and bought the best I could aford.
Nick you know it makes sence.
Buy my Princess!!

But then again it's not for sale. Maybe!!

I take it your mate dying brought you to realise that your allotted span could end at any time and why not enjoy yourself while you can? Otherwise did he die and leave you a fortune?

I have a business project which I am putting some cash into and if it comes off then I will buy again but maybe not at the moment. Anyway I don't want some other boat catching me on the rebound when I have'nt gotten over Amoureuse.

And anyway you smoke (don't deny it, you admitted it on whatshernames temporary forum) so your boat will probably need a detox before being fit for human habitation.

And you the sole defender of the Birchwood faith!
Personally I find I get severe withdrawal symptoms when I'm between boats which tend to get extremely severe when 'er indoors suggests we spend the money on something totally useless like a villa in Spain
So get yourself down to Southampton next month and cheer yourself up, mon!
Sounds like you may be ready for a Broom to take you into your dotage?

Re: broomy of Scotland

Ooh yes, a Broom. Sure sign of dotage there. People with Brooms have things like colour-coded mooring lines indicating what should be tied to where.

Broom,broom

I am deeply deeply wounded by your insensitive and hurtful comments regarding we Broom owners
Does'nt everyone have colour coded mooring lines? We have red ones when we moor port side to, green ones for starboard side to and an argument when we moor stern to. We also have colour coded fender sox matched to special colour coded handrail sections to ensure that the correct fender goes in the correct place with itsy bitsy pieces of coloured tape on the fender lines to indicate the precise height at which each fender should be tied. All highly practical stuff I'm sure you'll agree?
Even our treadmaster is colour coded but only accidentally since 10 pints of Bollocks Old Peculiar and Chicken Madras made an unscheduled reappearance off the Nab last Sunday

Re: Broom,broom

Oops. Well, it was a great pity that they refused to have anything to do with the Bond film, as an aft-cabin 50 would have easily trashed that black speedboat. Seriously I understand that they're going to have new styling for the boat show, like a sunseeker but more seaworthy: interiors will have high-gloss treadmaster panelling, with ruched cream-coloured treadmaster seating. Or is that the current model, I forget...

Re: Look Pay Attention!

I note that you have colour coded your treadmaster by barfing all over it. Well it serves you right for not paying attention to this forum. Matts and I covered this subject extensively a couple of weeks ago (see "wife and boat- is it possible?). We included definitions of upwind and downwind, optimal barf trajectory, how to deal with diced carrots and peas stuck in the beard and other pertinant facts. If you missed it and made a mess of your boat it can only be your own fault!

Hope you are feeling better

Re: Broom,broom

You're right. Broom are going to be introducing some world first cutting edge style technologies at Southampton including halogen bulbed interior lights, ceramic hobs, corian worktops, burr walnut helm panels and there's even talk of cherrywood interiors
