So who's gettng afloat this weekend? All being well I'm going to trundle down to Poole and Weymouth. Speaking of which, where the best place to overnight in Weymouth - marina or harbour wall?
Marina really, we had a manky wrapper of fish and chips with curry sauce lobbed into the cockpit when we stayed on the wall. Not a pleasant greeting in the morning!!! (Y-10 gets curry out of gelcoat too btw /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif)
We'll probably have a potter about this weekend if its nice, doubt if we'll go anywhere tho...
Marinas safer, you'll probably have to raft up on the harbour
wall. Mind you be careful the council bridge mob don't go on
strike, you get stuck on the wrong side!!
Thanks for the opportunity to visit your superb boat - hope you had a productive afternoon.
I've spent the last few days a) stowing stuff b) chucking stuff away c) removing the winter's accumulation of non-sailing stuff. I am working all weekend watching all you lucky bu**ers sailing past my office, but I finish 1900 Sunday, so weather permitting I'll get out for a couple of days on the evening HW.
There will then be the added bonus of not being on duty as lots of frantic boats all fight to get in the last lock on Monday, after their cruise in company up to Gloucester. There will be tears before bedtime!
Very sociable in Weymouth, only problem we found last summer was when smaller boats raft outside larger ones, making it difficult for boats of similar size to form rafts. Perhaps harbour users and staff could organise rafts
Agree with hlb, the harbour wall is great fun and the rafts can be of humungous proportions. Maybe we have been lucky, but we have never yet experienced an unpleasant incident (hope this isn't tempting fate).
I also agree that the, very helpful, harbour staff do need to impose some discipline on raft development. We noticed, last year that the convention of <10m boats using the cove whilst the bigger boats rafting on the quay, has gone by the board. We noticed 6-8m boats tied up along side 13m. Fine if it's a matter of just dropping one extra on the end, but awkward when the little one is third or fourth out. A few of the smaller boat owners were getting stroppy when something bigger wanted to come alongside. I'm surprised that the small boats use the quay as the cove is a really nice place to be, along way from the showers, but very pleasant none the less.
I think Weymouth is great, far enough away from the Solent to make it a passage, but reachable for a weekend.
SWIMBO's got me laying flag stones this Easter. It's a ploy to demonstrate that there isn't enough time in one life for sailing - and the money and time spent on the boat, mooring, Y.C. subs. &c. would be better spent on gardening and shopping. In the interests of harmony, I'm gradually coming round to her point of view.
Forecasts seems to indicate sun with lightish winds in the westerly sector. Am trying for St Vaast if this is still the case on Friday morn. Tides flooding am so might be a slow plod down past Ventnor but there again its forecast NW so spinny might get an airing- might get across before last orders. Too good to actually happen?
