DO:

Expect little courtesy from vessels flying certain flags/ burgees :D

DON'T

Wave at other Boats until you are level amidships, or you won't even get looked at :p

Otherwise, looks perfect!

Found this PDF as the first item on the TMBA site.

Pretty succinct and I expect folks would care to suggest other bits and perhaps some "donts".

But it's a good start and may encourage non regulars who pass by to have a look.

Yes, agree totally. How about adding -'learn to control your boat in the lock without constantly using your blasted bow and stern thrusters!!!!'

"DO slow down when passing moored craft."
Perhaps you could modify to, "DO slow down when passing moored or unpowered craft."

I know we don't all do it, but when I'm rowing it does make a difference to my day if someone slows down when going past, much in the same way that if I'm moored up in Silver Dragon it's nice when a rowing coach actually takes the effort to slow down past me.

*Hides now that I've mentioned rowing in a post that isn't complaining about it!*

Your joking of course....Feel sure there are POINTS to be EARNED for the number of times the offenders feel able to use those nasty grinders, perhaps they could have their own sub group in boat handling comps.....ie.most pointless and wilful use of a bow thruster for no-particular-reason-anybody-can-spot other than announcing to the world within earshot that they are rubbish at boat control. :)

Have I

a) caught an infection during my first season or
b) caved-in to the constant verbal abuse by ROBO's in here? (JOKE!!!)

I now feel impossibly guilty if I even hesitate to slow for rowers/canoes......even had a few nods of thanks in return:D

Must admit to the odd lapse with moored craft.....I'll get there in the end :D

Most of it is cool but the last DONT sounds like telling people what they should do . Ok it may not be nice for others but telling people what they have to do is just going to get them to ignore you .

DON'T create a nuisance with loud music or other noise such as
prolonged running of engines or generators.

Now i am as quiet as a mouse and prefer to get away from the public moorings but i know alot of other boaters are power hungry and want the " best to them " spots . Telling them DONT isnt going to go down well i think .

Hey, Coochie, surely you are not suggesting that people park on double yellows because the law tells them not to?

Perhaps thats why speeding on the river is becoming the norm ?

Somewhat perplexed as to why you single out that particular one as 'telling' peeps what to do. You could equally argue that ALL the 'Do's' are similarly provocative :D

Sounds like you are saying the bully boys should prevail and considerate folk should take a back seat.........

Etiquette may be a somewhat old fashioned word but, in essence, it is an attempt to delineate expectations for social behaviour - what some of us old farts would refer to as 'manners'. With the distinct lack of river patrols and enforcement it seems to me that fundamental discipline and self regulation amongst river users themselves is necessary if our enjoyment of the river is to be preserved.

Just saying it as i see it . The other stuff is pointing out the not so obvious to a new boater but telling people how they should conduct themselves is not your place or mine .

I am moored on a particulary busy rowing stretch of the Thames and the wash that comes off the rowing coaching powred boats is worse than any over boat I have witnessed this year. Especially as they tend the hog the banks in order to direct their rowers.

From what I've witnessed they are hardly on the moral high ground on this issue! But they do seem to think they are..

When approaching a coaching boat and coxed eight man boat stationary on the right hand side of the river, do NOT attempt to alter course and go round them .

Just as you're about to pass them (you're now on the left side of the river), they pull away and leave you to change course back to the right hand side .

Repeat this every 10-15 mins as you keep catching them up until they turn round and head back to whence they came ;).

Yeah, annoying that...

Alex, I've never had a cox slow down for me!!! You know where I am and how many go past me on any given weekend...

PS Don't argue or Silver Dragon's props wont get put back on... :) :)

Yep, every time.

Why the stupid brainless tw@t rowers don't just give it another twenty seconds and let you clear them, I'll never know!

Thats why I hate Rowers

Take the helm Alex, push those throttles forward, feel the satisfaction of listening to the pitiful cries as your wash covers them completely...:D

Bah, I give up.
Even I'm forced to admit that the clubs in the Bray/Windsor area are prone to ignoring River etiquette.

Some of them, yes, but the ETON COLLEGE rowers and their instructors driving the launches are generally better than the other local clubs.

WINDSOR BOYS SCHOOL allows some of it's students to use the launches, they are the worst for speeding.

one of the ladies that instructs the ETON boys is the best boat driver i have ever seen, always in the right place,at the right speed, with minimal disturbance.

the above paragraph does not apply to 90 percent of MOBO helmsman!:D

Mmmmm.. Well I stand by my statement that I have NEVER had a robo or trainer slow down, give way or wait for me, yet I ALWAYS slow right down and yield to them. Rebellion and Mum excepted of course..

Went out for an early morning RIB ride the other day, and thought I'd be extra friendly to the trainers. Cue cheery "good morning" to the first who didn't know how to react from a friendly mobo - meek half arxxd wave back, the second one I tried it on couldn't look more furiously straight ahead and ignore me if he tried!!

:)
