I'm about to start building a Didi 26 fulltime and the first and possibly hardest part is finding somewhere in London to do it! I've budgeted £5000 per year for rent/travel and I've started looking at railway arches but it's hard fo find a reasonable one that can get the completed boat out of.

I was wondering if anyone here knows of any suitable property available that is commutable from Central London. I need about 30ft x 15ft, dry with good access...

Thanks,

Ivan

Greenwich Yacht Club has indoor and outdoor space for members whilst Erith Yacht Club has outdoor space. Both are well within your budget but you will have to be a member and there may be a waiting list.

There are hardstands available at the marinas in London, you could look at possibly using scafolding and scafold tarpaulin. This should also be within your budget

Ivan,

I think it's a bit unrealistic to find something for that price centrally - for something 450 - 600 sqft B1 use within zone 4 boundary you're generally looking at £8k - £11k pa

I think you're right looking for something commutable - which direction is easiest for you? What travel time are you happy with?

Oops - looking at the wrong column in my little table /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
B1/B2 industrial abt £4k - £7k

I rent a 2000 sq ft arch in Bermondsey at about that sort of rent. There are rates on top of that though. Plenty of empty ones in that area most with HGV access.
We were (unofficially) sub letting part of ours which would have been ideal for your project until those sh*ts at Southwark council put in bollards right in front that now stop any HGV's delivering inside. Now have to unload outside. We can just turn a LWB Transit in.

PM me for more info. if you wish.

The chaps who have taken over running the canal basin at Gravesend have a large yard and may be happy to accommodate a project for some dosh. They now call themselves Moorfast. I can get you a number if you are interested.

Thanks for everyones suggestions. I live near the PO tower, so I can commute in any direction. Gravesend is maybe a bit too far though. I went down to Greenwich YC for a look today, pretty crowded ashore at the moment, and they do appear to have a waitlist for interior space, still I might visit them on their new members night.

An arch still seems the best bet - I viewed one yesterday afternoon in Leytonstone that I reckon I can get the boat out if I turn it on its side, though it'll be tight. I would much rather do that than build outside over winter. I think I'll also phone round all the councils next week and see if they know of anything.

Thanks again,

Ivan

Just a thought.

I assume that a boat will only need one journey out from the workshop! You may be able to dig up the bollards (with or without permission), get a boat out and replace bollards.

As I said, just a thought!
