Boat Yards In South Africa

Do you wish to DIY or get some one to do the work for you.

Richards bay or Durban tend to be the first port of call for RTW sailers.

Richards bay has a better yard than Durban but RB tends to be more DIY where Durban has more contract type people.

I am both a member of Zululand Yacht club in Richards bay and Royal Natal yacht club in Durban. My boat in in Durban at the marina but no extensive work can be done on the water at Durban marine but Point yacht club (next to marina) and Bluff yacht do have yards that can be used at a cost.

I am retired now so do not do work on other peoples boats just a bit of work on my own.

I do have contacts in Durban mostly that I can put you in touch with once you get here if you like.

Where are you now and if you do come to South Africa when do you think you would arrive.

Labour does look cheap compared to Europe but the the quality and productivity can be lower if not supervised correctly so some you must project manage the jobs correctly. This could be you of someone you employ. The alternative is to give the contract to a local but you will still need to supervise.

Also if you have SSB listen in on 8101 USB (radio peri peri) at 17:00 SA time when you get close for weather and other info. This is run by a couple of friends and may also help with any info you need.

Hi all and thanks for those replies and PMs. I'll be sure to pursue them.

I am still deciding what to do and whether I want to commit myself to a trip to SA. This was our original intention when we left India until we changed plans to come to Malaysia (a weather-related decision that was made for us). Now it's one more ocean away so I have to weigh up the financial costs vs the wear-and-tear costs of getting there. If we left it would be some time in the NE monsoon with a period in the Maldives/Chagos I guess, then Madagascar. It wouldn't be until Christmas time and it may not be this Christmas either, but 2014.

Once again, thank you for the replies, and thanks for the links, Roger. Very useful.
