Does anyone know if there is a boatyard anywhere below Teddington on the tidal Thames which has crane/lift facilities? My boat is only 3.5 tonnes so it doesn't need to be a huge capacity. I am buying a boat which is currently in Poole and I am trying to work out how to get it back to the Thames i.e either by sea or on a transporter.

I have Googled without much luck...

Any advice much appreciated, thanks.

Where is your final destination?

you are correct it is fairly limited but you can go above Tedd (where there are plenty) and just use a visitors ticket to get back downstream to your final dest?

Yes you can

Final destination is Penton Hook. Can I get a visitors registration at any other lock other than Teddington?

Why not drop it in at Penton? but you can get a visitors at any lock or if you plan to keep it on the Thames get an unregistered and then apply after that or simply apply now!

Thanks for the quick response!

I contacted the EA but they said I can't apply for a licence until I get a BSC. The boat does not have a BSC at the moment however I am arranging for one to be done as soon as it is on the Thames. I am just concerned about the boat being unlicenced which is why I thought about coming up through Teddington to get a visitors licence to fill the short term. If I can get one from any lock this solves my problem.

Would that be correct?

My mistake, I thought he wanted lifting out for the BSS test but then again that could be done whilst afloat.

Many thanks for your responses, I will wait for the "official" version.

It's my first "proper" boat so I'm just trying to make sure I do things correctly!

If you come upriver and wish to buy a 'visitors licence' , when you sign for it , you are signing to say that you comply with the BSS regs ...

' I confirm that i have read the BSS Essential Guide for non hire craft or 2002 Guide for Hire Craft . I certify that it complies in every respect with the safety standard requirements set out in that guide or the Recreational Craft Directive ( for launches placed on the market since 6 June 1996 ) I will not navigate this launch on the River Thames unless these conditions are complied with. I understand that the EA may require me to provide information confirming compliance with these conditions or to require my launch to be inspected. '

If you don't comply with them , and sign to say that you do , you could be liable in the event of anything untoward happening .... sorry :(

Why not get the BSS inspection done on the hardstanding at PH , and then have it craned in ?
