Boat won\'t go!!!!

Volvo AD31P in a sealine S24. For one reason or another I have not used the boat for over a year. The boat has been sat in the marina but I have periodically gone down and started it. This weekend time permitted and off we went. The engine revs normally but seems to be emitting quite a lot of black smoke and leaving sooty deposits on the water but only in high revs. The problem occurs when I engaged the drive. It goes but will not rev past 2000rpm and trundles along at a snails pace. There is no rope or netting fowling the props but quite a lot of encrustation was around the leg which I have removed but has made no difference.
Anyone have an Idea what the problem might be???

Check for fouling on the props, and the hull.

Check the air filter.

You can remove the rubber joint on the exhaust pipe, then the pipes on the elbow, then the elbow itself, to get access to the turbo. It should spin freely using your fingers with only a tiny amount of play along the shaft axis.

Agree with the others. Sounds very much like a badly fouled hull and drive. Lift the boat and get it scrubbed or at least get a diver to clean the hull and drive. 12 months sitting static in a Med marina would have caused a veritable tropical garden of marine flora and fauna to grow on the bottom

I would rather have a dirty bum than a knackered turbo. I will get the old girl out and give her a right good doin.
Thanks all for the advice. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Turbo might not be knackered, it just might be stuck. A twiddle with fingers might free it up again.

BUT: Big fat hairy safety warning: under no circumstances should you attempt to run the engine with any part of the the turbo / elbow / exhaust pipe / air system disconnected! (obvious to me, but you never know!)

I don't know the set-up but my fiver is on an air supply hose on the pressure side of the turbo having come loose. Revs without load but not enough air pressure under load and enough fuel for the compressed charge (which you're not getting) means low revs and excess fuel, ie: black smoke.
I've had the problem on turbo diesel cars and they are virtually undrivable.

Prepare to lose £5, as I really don't think that's the problem here. On an AD31, mostly eveything downwind of the turbo is sturdy metal pipe type stuff. KAD32's have lots of dodgy hoses on the inlet / supercharger side, but an AD31 is much simpler.

Fivers will not be paid out. the winners are Davido and Davinell, well done boys. Basically due to a lack of use the turbo was stuck. it now rotates and everything is rinky dinky doo. Thanks all for the advice.
