The windows in my yacht are glass and sit in recess in the cabin sides, on the outside they are sealed with what feels like“rubberised mastic” cannot see any seal on the inside. Seal is approx 30 year old so has done a good job. At the moment no leaks but the outside seal is beginning to peel back at the edges and expose the cabin sides, which is ply.

Just looking for any advice on “mastic” material to replace the seal with and who from.

Thanks

I just removed my similarly placed plastic windows on my Beneteau. They had thin rubber seals glued on the inside as well as the mastic sealing from the outside.
I'm going to use a sicoflex type product to put them back in. Hopefully I will be able to find a matching colour as I only removed 1 of four windows.

Hi,
A readily available non setting mastic window seal material of the type you describe is obtainable from most glaziers and is manufactured by Adshead and Radcliffe www.arbo.co.uk .
The item in question is Arboseal GZ it comes on a roll and is 12mm x 3mm and is available in, Black, Grey or Teak colours.
I have used this product over several years with good success and it can be removed without destroying the surface to which it seals to!

Have used a similar product to Toby Jug, as he said glaziers stock it.Very easy to apply it has a paper type backing on one side to enable it top be lined up.Its a non setting mastic guaranteed for I think 20yrs.If you use sikaflex(a very good product) you will have hell of a job getting the window out in future.

[/ QUOTE ] Be very carefully with Sikaflex, the normal product you get in most chandlers will ensure that you will never, ever remove/replace the windows not matter how much you may want or need to. I would research which one carefully, there may be a softer non setting variant.

I spent a bit of time researching when I replaced several windows last year, and went with this stuff which worked a treat so far, and will be easily removable when required http://www.marinemastics.com/marine-seal-033/marine-seal-033.html

As already said, be very careful with Sikaflex. Arbosil is the sort of low modulous silicone sealant you need. SUpplied by Halow marine as per link above.

Although I didn' start the thread, you've educated me a bit guys. Gonna make a few calls to your suggested dealers before replacing the windows.. Thanks for your help...

I had to replace a portlight on my Dragonfly last year because the frame had failed. Quorning the builder use non-setting butyl rubber sealant, and I'm glad they did. I was prepared for a fight, but it came out straight away, no effort at all. The sealant was still gooey and could even have been reused.
