I have already posted in the Lounge about the death of Paddy Macklin, aboard his boat Tessa in Falmouth. He had been living aboard since 2011. My bro, loosely connected through in laws, knows Paddy's mother and sister, and they would like the boat to go to the museum. This seems an unlikely outcome. Bro phoned me to ask what would be the way to dispose of it otherwise. I told him it will probably be handed over to a boatyard to sell.
So, what's it worth? 50 year old, wood, 27ft sloop, sailed round the world in 2009/11. No engine, no electrics. The engine was removed before the trip. Is the provenance worth anything?
His obit can be found if you google 'Paddy Macklin obituary, paperwriter'
His cremation will be March 2nd.

If the boat is sound it would make a great project. No old engine and electrics to remove and dispose of, just a blank canvas to fit what you want into.

I tried to explain to my bro, the rigging probably needs attention, the sails may be well worn, and the hull might have suffered from several knockdowns and a capsize, I think at least once. A survey will be interesting. She may be essentially in a post-circumnavigation condition. In any case his family have zero interest in the boat, just as well, I counselled against putting her in a yard and for sale then hanging out for too much money. I put her at £3k max.

A wooden boat of this age and condition is more of a liability than an asset. Going to be difficult to sell via an agent as too low a value. You could try listing on Boats and Outboards or similar and wait for a potential customer. Best bet would be to put her on eBay just to sell her at what ever price it makes. Then it becomes someone elses problem.

Not knowing the condition of the boat I cannot dispute your opinion but it’s a size that is manageable as project and could give hours of pleasure restoring,I say that as one who has restored a wooden boat……..in my youth 🙂

You are not getting any younger. Besides I think she is not what you are looking for.

Oh no your right, grp all the way what is off putting are the normally awful electrical installation and a worn out engine, much better a clean slate………..but for a younger man or woman it could be a start at the relight price

It was suggested briefly that I might take an interest in the sale, I sold three of my other brother's boats for him in the past (he was away in the Med). Ebay might be good, the story will generate interest. I don't mind helping out, but then the people aren't known to me in the slightest.

There's no saying that it needs a rebuild, he may have kept up with maintenance, he was aboard full time after all, and was talking about another trip, the NW passage.
Out of interest I may go and have a look if I'm allowed.

Paddy Macklin was an old mate and when I visited him in 2014 we visited a boatbuilder in Helford who had carried out work on Tessa after the circumnavigation. I don't know what work was done. I can't remember the builder's name - a youngish guy, probably in his 40s now, he built beautiful luggers and I think he was from New Zealand or spent his childhood there - he had a kiwi accent. Tessa needed repairs after a complete rollover south of Tasmania - it probably wouldn't be hard for me to find out who did the repairs if anyone is interested. Whoever ends up with Tessa is certainly getting some history, all well documented in Paddy's book Captain Bungle's Odyssey.
