Boat Transport - Kiel/UK

My boat is in Kiel needing a new engine. I've looked at the possibilities of getting a new one put in there but I'd be happier, and possibly less poor, if it were to be done in the UK. Has anybody got any suggestions as to the most economic way of bringing it back, given that, although it's a sailing boat, I'd need a tow through the Kiel Canal and I don't fancy the North Sea at this time of the year?

What size of boat?

I paid £1800 to have my 24 footer brought back from Denmark. If you're boats small enough to fit on a trailer towed by a 4x4 (say less than 28 foot) it'll probably cost you around this, or maybe less if you can share the cost with a boat being taken out to Germany. If the boats larger, and needs a lorry, it starts getting very expensive.

I'd have thought it would be much cheaper to have a new engine fitted out there, and then sail the boat back nexy year.

I suggest it would certainly be cheaper in The Netherlands and very probably in Germany, particularly if you need to add a couple of grand for transport. Unless we are talking well into five figures, in which case I don't know. What kind of engine and boat?

When we were in Kiel last year we spoke to an engineer from a large yacht who had brought his boat from the Med to have drive shafts, props etc replaced because it was cheaper, faster and better done there. The yard just N of Stichthoorn marina.

If my memory serves me correctly I believe that you will not be allowed to tow through the Kiel Canal. You are only allowed to tow if you have broken down within the canal and only as far as the next maintenance/repair point.

Good Luck

She is a 32 foot Rival. If we'd broken down in the canal we might have got as far as the Elbe wfrom where sailing home would have been a possibility but having broken down just outside the canal, further progress wasn't possible. I had a quote locally, nearly 12,000stg - outrageous. Noone else in Kiel I was put in touch with was much better. However, the Beta Marine man in germany has come up with a much more reasonable quote. I treid Holland but it didn't seem to be much cheaper. I may try the yard near the Stichhorn marina. Quotes to bring her back are around 2,600stg. An analysis of costs at this stage suggest that, with the advantage of having her nearby where I can keep an eye on her it would still be cheaper to ship her back and re-engine her here.

UK quotes from oldenburg to Hayling Island ranged from £2500-£3500 + vat & craneage for 11.5m 12 tonne boat in April this year, so your figure sounds about right. Hard to believe you'll save that much by keeping an eye on things, but then I haven't asked for prices in Germany.

New engine

I had a Betamarine BD722 sent out to Sweden (Gothenberg) for 80 pounds plus VAT. I thought that was cheap. The labour to put it in is another matter. For really cheap work on the boat people recommend Poland but do nail everything desireable down. Thats the advice I've had.

I'm surprised at your high quote. I had a Yanmar 30 GM installed in my Sadler in Leiden, I don't remember the exact cost but it was a fraction of the one you mention. The engine cost seems to be standard across Europe.

Can you remember the name of the yard in Leiden? Or can you recommend a yard in Holland? Holland has been suggested as a place to get it done but i haven't had any success there yet.
