We're thinking about moving our QS640 Weekender from Sparkes at Hayling Island to Penton Hook in Chertsey for the winter, as MDL allow transfers.

Can anyone recommend a company to trailer the boat between marinas?

Thanks in advance

I've done that trip, that way and the other way round, quite a few times. Always by water though, 2 days and stop at Ramsgate. Or stop at Chatham (also MDL) and leave the boat there for a while. You need to pick your weather in a small boat but it is great fun.

Don't forget that however you transfer her you'll need a boat safety certificate and the river licence.

Elessar,

I don't think I could make it in two days in our little boat, but it's got my imagination going.

How many hours did it take you from Hayling to Ramsgate, and Ramsgate to Penton Hook?
I reckon it would take me four days, but what are the chances of four days decent weather !

AndieMac - thanks for the tips

Hi

We have moved our boat from Port Solent to Windsor Marina, then a year later back to the coast.......Our new baby boy was the reason.

On both times we used Thames Valley Interboat.......and they where bloody brilliant!!!!

Give them a call and ask for Jenny. Very helpfull and really took care of my boat.

I have no connection, just very very happy with their service.

Regards,

Paul.

PH to the itchen is about 200 miles I think from memory, Sparkes a bit less, so guess about 180.

The last trip I did in my 28 footer (my previous boat) was lunch in Eastbourne, overnight Ramsgate, lunch in Limehouse and tied up for dinner. Can't remember the timings I'm afraid but I'll have the route in my Chartplotter I'll take a look at the weekend.

What speed can you cruise at?

About 15 knots if the sea is calmish.

It's the sea/wind that worries me, not so much the distance.

What time of year did you make the journeys?

Thanks again

I bought a 28' sportsboat from Sparkes a few weeks ago and had a great recommendation form Nick at Sparkes Marine Agency to transport the boat to Pwllheli North Wales. The chap was called Brian at Southampton trailers who was a seasoned veteran in boat moves and did a very professional job for us at reasonable cost. His number is 07973445767

I used to do winter on the Thames and summer on the south coast, so spring or autumn. I have done it in flat calm, and when dover coastguard said the dover straight was "rough" as well as states in between. I didn't go back last winter, fed up of the increasing cost of the river licence and the winter lock closures.

Even in a flat calm you'll get some entertainment at some point in the journey, as you have to travel East then West, passing some major headlands and lots of shallows. South Foreland always seems to throw something at you whatever the weather. And the Thames itself can be surprisingly rough until you get to Thurrock, particularly the first bend south past the medway whatever that bit is called. Trailing is easier no doubt, but by water far more fun. The journey is always a highlight for me, a proper voyage and going through central london in particular always gives me a buzz. Remember if the sea state worries you, you can coast hop all the way. Apart from the long stretch from the medway to central london you're never far from a safe haven.

Thanks for all the replies & recommendations

My current thinking is to get the boat trailered this autumn, then back by water in the spring, when the days are longer.

I've had a quote for £250 one way, which sounds pretty reasonable to me.

Have a good weekend's boating !
