Boat Transport...... for what it\'s worth

'Boat is nearly finished so this morning I phoned a couple of transport companies to sus out moving it down to the wet stuff.

The first company I phoned was PETERS plc at Chichester Marina. I have been there a few times and noticed their very fine fleet of Boat Transporters and felt that I could trust my boat to what appeared to be a very professional company.
I spoke to the Transport Manager whose name I know but will not post to save him further embarassment. He was rude and offhand and said that "we are not interested in small private jobs".......... We are talking about 10tons of 39ft, long keeled steel hull here! It is quite a difficult job which will involve some manoeuvring in a confined space but the hull is the same size as it was when it was brought in here so I it CAN be done. To cut a long story short I told him that I was not impressed and he hung up on me......

Next I phoned Terry Ollerton of SHORE-LINE Transport who was co-operative and helpful despite being in a hurry to get away to drive from Southampton to Scotland...... Who would you give the contract to?

I have used Terry on a coupleof occasions in the past and recommend him highly.

Very good service and staff who know how valuable customers are. And always willing to try to juggle his schedule if you are in a pickle.

I keep my yacht at chichester marina.
I have never know a company (peters) so rude in my life.
The problem is that peters hae so much business and treat customers like sh*t.
If you give me his name I'll walk in there and confront him for you with pleasure.

What i would love to do is start up my own version of peters right next door, anyone up for it?? Just need to find some capital.

Stay way from Peters. Ours is a long story of woe and I won't labour you with the details. They are "bad news"!

Re: Boat Transport...... for what it\'s worth

Today's boring post.

It's very easy to slag off suppliers and the like (whether or not they deserve it).

The problem with moving any heavy load is that there are a myriad of rules and regulations of which the punter is unaware. Crane companies need somebody to act as 'banksman' while doing the lift(s) and whilst the crane is insured itself for the lift it is virtually impossible to get insurance for the craft during the lift.

Transporting the craft is not a problem - the insurance is different.

You ask a company for a quote and whatever, rather than saying asterisk Off, they usually go silent or faff about.

The solution - if any is to get a so-called 'expert' to 'organize' the whole procedure for you.

I did and he expletived it up, but he at least provided a jolly good crew to do the lifts and transport details - we sorted it out, painfully, between us, and at least 20tons of tin were move succesfully without much damage from A to B.

My message is try to understand / find out what the problems may be by "asking around" . You have to be diplomatic, grovel if necessary, or pay a lot for an "expert" who will probably cock it up anyway.

too many companies will obfuscate in the hope that you'll go away; those that don't will tell you to **expletive** away - but that results in your rant.

Moving a one off load from a one off customer is really not worth the candle, cranes and lorries make whatever they do from repeat business, but nobody likes to turn anything away.

If "we" treat everyone else as an enemy; raggies; mobos; authority, whetever we'll probably only get an ulcer.

So there!

I feel better now, Nurse please wipe my.....

Sorry if I'm being thick but exactly what are you saying here ? Did Peters, if the scenario above is totally accurate, act in a polite & business like manner or not? I'm not quite sure what conclusion to take from your post.

I totally disagree with that...

There's a very simple answer for a company that does not want to do the work. Very politely quote a totally over the top price. In all likelihood the customer will walk away, if they don't and accept the offer then you probably *do* want the work 'cos you'll make a handsome profit from it.

Being rude and/or ignoring your customer is never warranted.

Re: Boat Transport...... for what it\'s worth

Thanks to all for taking the trouble to reply. I hadn't really expected any response, I was only venting my spleen because I was so taken aback by the guy's rudeness.

Simonwood, I don't think confronting him would do much good but should you ever find yourself in conversation with the MD or anyone else in a highish position in the company, you might like to mention this thread......

Trueblue, it WILL be a slightly tricky operation but it CAN be done. All you say is quite correct but I feel there was no excuse for being so rude and offhand. He should have explained the problems and either worked out how to overcome them or as EdEssery says, quote a price which is not competitive.

As it is, I came off the phone feeling "Sod you then, I won't give you my money" and frankly there is plenty of competition out there so I would advise others to use a different company too as it seems that Peters are only interested in moving floating caravans from one large concrete space to another.

I've finished!

Paul.
