I want to equip a newly-bought boat with a set of tools to keep on board. From past experience I know that ordinary tools rust easily, and currently there are no tools on board. Any suggestions of where and what to buy without getting ripped off? Boat in Poole by the way.

I just bought reasonably priced tools from Halfords (spanners, socket set, engineers hammer etc.) and Stanley screwdrivers, pliers etc from Homebase. Wipe them lightly with oil every year and afetr 3 years no sign of rusting. Also have rechargeable Bosch drill on board and electric srewdriver. No problems there either. I tend to regard hacksaw blades as diposable items.

However my boat is very dry, no water in the bilge. I keep all the tools in a heavy duty 'fabric' tool bag. In my experience it's metal tool boxes that rust, thence causing rust on the tools, and plastic tool boxes are usually too flimsy for lifting in and out of lockers.

I reckon a "Chinese Tool Set" in plastic case is not a bad idea ...

The tools especially the screwdrivers are rubbish ... but replace when broken with better quality and you keep the case as a convenient way to keep them all in order. A light spray with WD40 or wipe over with an oily rag ... can help delay the onset of rust ...

Even if you buy a set every year ... at average price of about 10 - 20 quid - it's not a bad way to do it ...

I gave up with really good tools in box's etc. - only ended up wasted and lasted no longer than the chinese rubbish due to rust .........

I have only purchased relatively cheap tool sets for the same reason- but was told recently that you can get anti rust paper which can help store tools on board rust free. Google search came up with VCI or VPI paper? Any one use it & if so, does it work?

My boat is quite damp, but an annual spray in the tool drawer with WD40 seems to do the trick. Most spanners and many screwdrivers are chromed anyway, and an annual dab of grease on the screw of a shifter is all that's needed, I'd keep the anti rust paper for delicate things such as a vernier, if you carry such tools.

In gun shops they sell little sachets of some sort of volatile stuff. You put it in a bag with the tools and they don't rust.

Try Camelia Oil applied with a Abura-Tsubo to the inside of whetever you store your tools in. Axminster also do some small tins about 3cm across with an evaporating fluid in them that also fights rust.
No connection other than regular customer...

Banrust is the name of the paper. It's often used when storing surgical instruments or delicate bits of armament.
