Can someone with an engineering background help me with assessing some tolerances. Problem seems an increasing one where one moment everything is running smoothly and then suddenly things get blocked. Is there some industry standard for stress testing ? Something like putting ,say, a sample thread under increasing abuse and identify at quite what point someone snaps? Would identifying these tolerance levels help avoid accidents? Can the forums broad experience give me some tips to help me avoid getting into trouble such as:
Are some types of thread more prone to getting blocked than others ?
Is there a limit as to how many threads its safe to have aboard at any one time?
Should I carry spares?
What should I do navigating an uncharted thread at night or in fog?
Other suggestions most welcome

Ah yes - engineering tolerances! There are various form and types of thread. You could, as with other tests, have an "interference fit" where you deliberately jam your opinions into someone elses views, and then see what breaks.

Then there is the black art of NDT, or Non Destructive Testing. You have to push and push the point without the thread or the moderator breaking. If either breaks, you've failed. Or your point had a weakness to start with.

Or what about "fatigue testing"?? You keep bending the rules one way, then another, until they break. While all the bending is going on you will notice that the moderator gets very hot!

And finally....Testing to Destruction. This is where you and your engineering colleagues go all out to break every component...and finally there is nothing left!!

The testing is done in accordance with the KSI (Kim's Standards Institute) codes of practice. All decisions are final and all appeals are ignored until the correct amount has been deposited in the KSI bank account. Whereupon the appeal is officialy ignored and binned.

Whilst it is unfortunate that rules have to be applied they are there because in the past posters have ignored the published terms and conditions. Therefore adjudication became an unpleasant but necessary reality.

I Think king Kim does a pretty good job considering the ruffians that he has to deal with (me included), his editing has so far been even handed and fair.

So why don't we let him get on with it without taking daft pot shots at him.
